“And who loves me.”
“That too.”
Teo put the note down, turned the light off and snuggled back against my torso.
“I’m excited for what the future brings,” he said.
“Like being done with Calculus or spring break?” I asked.
“Well, I’m excited for those things but I meant us. Our future. We’ve known each other for years but now it’s so much better.”
I thought about our future together and remembered an earlier conversation.
“We’re going to the local shelter and finding a mutt that wants us.”
“What?”
“In the future,” I explained. “You said your dad was expecting you to find a girl at Middleton, start a career, buy a house, get a golden retriever, have kids. Well, I’m gonna say it now. I love golden retrievers but I don’t want a specific breed. We’ll take the one that picks us.”
“Some context next time, please.”
I chuckled then apologized.
“I forgive you,” Teo teased. “And that sounds fine to me, but maybe we can get a head start?”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Middleton has a shelter. Let’s go look tomorrow.”
“Really? Is that allowed?”
“I do know the vice president of the frat.”
“Do you think I should try to sleep with him to get him on our side?” I asked.
“Yes, that should definitely be our strategy,” Teo answered. “I heard he likes doggy style.”
“He’s not the only one.”
