“Why do you not trust witches? That seems like a problem considering the other Alphas are married to some.”

“Not all are nice,” he stated as he pulled the car out of the parking lot. “There are good witches and bad witches. You can smell it on them.”

My eyebrows went up. “You can?”

He nodded. “Although I doubt you would, since you are human. But it’s like a rotten corpse. Evil magic has a way of twisting people, turning them into things they aren’t. It rots them from the inside out.”

“You speaking from experience?” I asked, knowing he had to have reasons for feeling such strong emotions.

He nodded. “I’ve seen more evil witches than good in our pack. Shifters and witches have an old rivalry. We’ve come a long way, but some things aren’t always a hundred percent fixed. I doubt they ever will be.”

I looked outside the window. But my head thought about Elize. I don’t know what it was about her, but it was like I knew her. I’d never met her in my life, but a part of my soul felt like I had. I couldn’t put my finger on it.

“I would like to see her again.”

He made a face. “I think not.”

I scowled. “And why not?”

He shrugged. “Because there would be no reason to. Let’s not waste time on you making friends. You’re not planning on sticking around after all.”

I crossed my arms. “This isn’t about making friends. This is about me finding out what happened before and how everyone in the pack healed. If you want your freedom back, I need to know the big picture. I can’t help if I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing, and Eliza was offering to help me.”

He ground his teeth together.

So, I pushed. “Do you not trust Elize? Is that why you don’t want me to?”

He clicked his tongue. “I trust Elize. I just don’t trust the convent.”

I shook my head. “Who?”

“The convent, the other witches in Troy’s pack. They are new to joining the pack.”

“And I think you need to push those emotions aside because we have to dig up what will help the pack. I can’t just sit at home and twiddle my thumbs trying to find things out. I have to talk to people.”

I watched him sigh, his jaw clenching and unclenching.

I raised an eyebrow. “Or would you like me to live in your house forever?”

He rolled his eyes. “Fine. I will take you to visit their pack.” He turned the radio on, and I knew it was his way of wanting quiet.

I glanced out the window and sighed. I felt like I was never going to find the answer.

Chapter 7 - Klaus

A couple of days later, we made the trip to Troy’s pack. I was already irritated as it was, and the idea of being around a bunch of witches put me even more on edge. Aubrey seemed calm, excited even, which didn’t help. Here I was trying to keep her safe, and she wanted to throw herself into dangerous situations.

The drive was quiet, with neither of us speaking. The house had been extra quiet over the past couple of days. I found she’d dug out some books on shifters and witches. She seemed to be doing her research and reading everything she could find about them.

We arrived in Troy’s pack and headed for their city hall. I shouldn’t have been surprised to see that Elize was outside waiting for us. She waved as we parked, smiling ear to ear.

I took a deep breath, needing this to go smoothly. “I’m making a rule.”

Aubrey paused on her door handle. “You’re joking.”

“No, I’m not. If anything happens, or I feel like this isn’t safe, we are leaving.”

She frowned. “We are in Troy’s pack. What are you afraid is going to happen?”
