“Why hello there,” she said softly.

“You look like a very content little omega,” Nic mused.

Her heart pounded out of her chest at the affection she saw in his gaze, and wondered if he could see the same reflected in hers or if he was too blinded by whatever he had with Griffith.

“You’re mine,” she blurted. Her eyes widened, and she slapped a hand over her mouth.

Nic’s brows took a vacation on his forehead as he tilted his head at her. “What?”

Wendy cleared her throat. Better now than never, right? “I’ve been thinking about it all day,” she began. “How you and Griffith have this past and clearly you’re both not over it, and at first I felt jealous, but then I realized I didn’t care if you and him were working it out or whatever—as long as he didn’t—as long as I got to keep you.”

Wendy cleared her throat again, wringing her hands in her lap and feeling her cheeks burn.

Nic’s gaze widened, and she watched him part and close his lips a few times. “There’s a lot to unpack there.”

“I know,” she admitted. “I guess I could work on my delivery a little.” Her chuckle was strained.

“My and Griffith’s past is the past. And even if…” Nic’s laugh wasn’t any more relaxed than hers as he brushed a hand through his hair. “Even if something like that were to happen—with anyone—you wouldn’t lose me.” He slid closer and wrapped his arms around her waist. “Have you considered that I wanna be kept?”

Wendy tilted her head at him, nerves bouncing inside her a lot like butterfly wings in her belly. “I don’t want to speak for after the heat and everything, because who knows what will happen. But,” Wendy continued, changing directions, “I guess what I’m trying to say is whatever happens…”

“Happens?” Nic offered.

Nodding, Wendy stared up at him, studying his expression for any hint as to what he was thinking. “Are you okay with that?” she questioned.

Nic’s smile curled deeper and deeper before he leaned down to hesitate with his lips millimeters away.

“Very.”

Wendy closed the distance between them, her nerves melting into something much warmer.

His scent swam around them, and she felt both at ease and excited by this beta. In this moment, he was the only one she really trusted. The only one who she knew wouldn’t hurt her.

“I just want you to know I find you extremely attractive,” Wendy breathed, pushing him up, back into a seated position so she could straddle his lap. Suddenly she felt very awake.

And horny.

But whose fault was that?

Trailing a hand up the back of his arm and down over his shoulder, she sighed.

Nic was so pretty. And Wendy liked pretty things.

She slid it lower, down the wide expanse of his chest and to the waistband of his sweats. Beneath her, they were stretched over the thick muscle of his thighs.

His abs bounced beneath her touch as he chuckled. Arms encircling her, he pulled her closer and settled a hand on her lower back. “I am so relieved. Here I was, worried we kept having sex because you were repulsed by me.”

Wendy rolled her eyes. “You are just so…” She trailed off because she couldn’t put the ball of emotion in her chest into an actual word.

“So what?” he asked, yanking her against him, voice dark velvet against her lips. Wendy’s entire body lit up like the Hollywood sign, and she steadied herself by framing her hands at the nape of his neck, tilting him up to her.

On his lap was the only time Wendy would ever get to be eye to eye with Nic, and she had to admit it had its advantages.

“So far away from being inside me. Too far, some might say,” she warned, swiveling her hips over him.

“Well, we’ve gotta break in the new bed somehow,” he drawled, fingers pressing into her waist.

Wendy grinned. “I love the way your mind works.”
