I looked behind Cal, saw Alex’s foot at the top of the stairs, and knew he was still listening. I nodded in that direction, and Cal looked over his shoulder.

“Look, Cal. You really need to let it go. It was a stupid mistake at a party, and everyone was drunk. If we’re going to move forward, then you need to leave this shit in the past. Alex already said sorry, didn’t he?” I prayed that Cal caught on.

His eyes roamed over my face, and I silently pleaded for him to understand. “You’re right. Alex apologized, and so have you. I will try to do better,” he answered, and I slumped with relief. Cal mouthed, ‘Talk later’ before he stood. “I’ll get you some ice for your foot.”

Time was running out. I needed to figure out how to minimize the damage because Cal wouldn’t let it go, and I didn’t want to let him go. I wished I could turn back the hands of time and fix all of this before it happened. There were so many things I would’ve done differently, starting with never going to that party, leaving my cup unattended near Alex, or letting him help me when I suddenly felt ill and dizzy.

“We are firing up the snowmobiles, and I was coming to see if you wanted to go?”

“I’d love to. I haven’t been on one since the last time we were up here,” I said. I was excited to head out on the trail, hanging on to the back of Cal. It might be too early for a celebration, but I owed Hales a bottle of wine.

CHAPTER TWELVE

CALLUM

I was going to kill him. It was my only thought as I marched around the oversized workshop that stored all the sleds, glaring at the shiny machines warming up.

Ty grabbed my arm and dragged me to the far corner, away from everyone talking. “What the hell is going on? You look like you’re going to murder someone.”

“I’m fucking thinking about it.” Ty opened the door and forced me to step out back.

“Did Skye tell you what happened?” I shook my head no. “Then what has you all fired up?”

“I know he….” I couldn’t say the word. “I fucking know he did. I found him cornering her again. It’s like he just can’t leave her alone.” I ground my teeth and punched the metal wall.

“But Skye hasn’t confirmed our suspicions?” I glanced at my best friend as he crossed his arms and rubbed at his chin. “What the hell does he know that has her so scared to talk? Does she think he’ll hurt you?”

“I don’t know.” I ran my hand through my hair, the rage close to boiling over. I told Skye I would stop asking, but I couldn’t stop seeing how he looked at her and kept popping up whenever she was alone. “That’s what I keep trying to figure out. I can’t think of anything that would hold her back now. I mean, it’s going to take time to get back to normal, but if she didn’t willingly sleep with him, then why not tell me?” I stomped in a circle. “This is driving me crazy. I want to beat his face in until he tells me the truth.”

“Did Skye say she would tell you?”

My shoulders slumped as I sighed. “Yeah, but I think she’s hoping I’ll give up or wait until we leave, and I can’t do it. I need to know.”

“Even if it hurts Skye in the process?”

I stopped circling and pondered the question. “Fuck. I hate it when you bring up good points.”

Cale opened the door and looked at the two of us. “Um…are you two lovebirds done back here? We want to get going?”

“Yeah, we’re coming,” I said.

Ty grabbed my shoulder before I could walk inside. “If we want him to get the punishment he deserves, keep cool and get Skye to talk. She holds the key to what really happened. Then we’ll make sure he’s thrown in jail.” Jail was too good for him, but I nodded my agreement and walked into the workshop.

Skye was already leaning against my sled, helmet under her arm, and looking every bit as sexy as any wet dream. Who gave a fuck about bikinis when your girl looked that hot in a snowmobile suit. Shit, now all I could think about was finding a remote spot on the trail to get her alone.

“You’re giving me a strange look,” Skye said as I stepped up to her.

“You are so sexy. I can’t take my eyes off of you.”

Skye smiled. “It’s the boots, right? I always knew you were a freak for forty below wear.” She lifted her foot with the massive black boot, and I laughed.

“Yup, that was what drew me to you.” I gave her a quick kiss, and seeing her eyes shine dimmed some of my volatile anger.

“Let’s go!” Tyler yelled as he kneeled on his sled to get it off the concrete floor.

“You sure you’re ready for this,” I asked, helping her strap her helmet.

“You better believe it. I’ve missed this almost as much as I missed you,” Skye said, and I laughed.
