“Get out of my way. I’m the one with first aid training,” Tyler said, kneeling beside me.

I let him trade places with me as I looked up at Alex and was on him in a blink.

“What the fuck was that?” I yelled, grabbing his jersey and pushing him back.

“I forgot, man. I’m not used to there being a chick in net,” he said, laughing.

“You could’ve killed her,” I growled and punched him across the face. The rest of the guys quickly jumped in and separated us. “Don’t you fucking laugh. We can’t get to a hospital, you asshole.”

“Fuck, man. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to do it.” Alex pulled away from Zach and Austin. “I’m fucking done. This was no fun having to worry about her,” he said and skated off. I watched him go, tempted to go after him and finish the argument.

“I’m okay, really. Just winded,” Skye said, drawing my attention. I skated over to her and knelt to look into her eyes. I’d seen way too many close calls over the years, and concussions were serious.

“We really should get you checked out, and I’m going to ask you the same random questions for the next twenty-four hours.” Skye opened her mouth, and I shook my head at her. “Don’t bother arguing with me. Any of these guys are going to agree with me, we’ve all seen bad shit, it’s better to be safe.”

She rubbed the back of her neck. “Okay, fine. Ask away.”

“What’s your name?”

“Skye Reeves,” she said, smiling. Then her smile fell. “I mean Windsor, shit, sorry.” Her cheeks turned a sexy shade of red with embarrassment for the slip-up. “Maybe I did hit my head harder than I thought,” she said and looked away.

“Please, you don’t want this doofus’s last name. Skye Tucker sounds a lot better,” Tyler said, puffing out his chest. “You like the mountains. Move to Colorado with me.”

“Hey, what the fuck is going on here? No, she is not moving to Colorado,” I growled.

“How about we just start with getting me off the ice,” Skye said, deflating the rant I was gearing up for as she lifted her arms for help. Tyler and I each took an arm, and I watched her closely as we pulled her to her feet.

“I’m good, I swear,” she said, shaking off any more help as she slid over to the snowbank we’d been using as a bench and sat down to take off her gear. I followed her over to take mine off as well but kept an eye on her. She tried to hide the wince as she bent over to unbuckle the pads, but I caught it.

“Here, let me get them,” I said.

“No.” Skye jerked her leg away from my reach.

“I told you not to get all whiney if you hurt yourself.”

Tyler slapped a hand over his eyes as he skated away.

“I just said I don’t want your help. How is that me being whiney?” The rest of the guys skated away, giving us space. I ground my teeth as I stared at her, trying to come up with a good answer. “Go away and stop staring. You’re freaking me out,” Skye snipped. I turned to leave, but she called my name. “Oh, and don’t do that again.”

“What now?”

“Fighting because of me. We’re not together. I don’t want you stepping in like we are.”

“Do you think it’s that easy,” I asked, the irritation burning in my gut.

“What are you talking about?” Skye pulled off one pad and started on the buckles on the second one.

“You think I’m just able to snap my fingers and turn off all the emotions and habits? Maybe it works like that for you, but not for me,” I said, clenching my fists as Skye’s face turned as dark as the stormy sky.

“Wow, you could’ve fooled me. You broke up with me, took off the next day, and I haven’t heard a word from you in three years. You seemed to have moved on well enough with all the models and rich elite you run with. They suit you better than I did anyway. We both know I never fit in your world. Maybe you should look up the definition of the word easy. You don’t seem to understand what it means.”

“Don’t turn this around on me. You know why I broke it off. I had good reason.” I pointed at the house where Alex had gone.

“If you say so,” she said and stood, trying to pull the oversized shoulder pads off over her head. Grabbing them, I yanked them off and sucked in a deep breath as I stared into her angry green eyes. She was still mine. I could lie to everyone else, but my heart wanted to call me a liar for thinking I could walk away from her forever and pretend she never existed.

“Why are you staring at me like that,” Skye asked.

“Because I want to lay you on this snowbank and fuck you until you scream my name.” Skye’s eyes grew wide, her mouth falling open as I leaned closer. “You still want me. I can see it in your eyes.”
