“You’re lying. I wouldn’t….” The rest of my denial died on my tongue as Cain slowly stood. He’d seemed tall while I’d been standing but sitting on the ground like this in front of him made it feel like he was a giant sent to crush me.

“Am I, though?” His head tilted slightly, the look daring me to argue. “I marked you as mine.” He walked away as the song started over again, and I wanted to scream at him to turn it off. “I must admit that my come looked fabulous all over your ass.”

I sucked in a sharp breath as more memories surfaced. The fantastic fantasy dream I had and how satisfied I felt…

Those two signs were only the beginning evidence. The strange bruise on my neck was like a fingerprint, and the dried come all over my ass was the next piece of evidence. It hadn’t been a dream, and it hadn’t been Peter jerking off on me. He’d denied it over and over again, and I didn’t believe him any more than he believed me about the cucumber.

“Aw…see? Now you’re remembering.” Cain walked over with a new glass of water and squatted in front of me once more. This time though, he sat the glass beside the thick foam thing I was sitting on. “Sunshine, you understand me better than the rest of your classmates, so let’s see how well you actually know me. Let’s play a game.”

“I don’t want to play your stupid game,” I snarled.

He raised his hand to hit me again, and I didn’t back away, so I gave myself a tiny pat on the back. This time the strike didn’t come. His hand was raised in the air, but instead, he slowly reached out like a snake coming for my neck and wrapped his hand around my throat.

I tried to jerk away, but the subtle pressure increased until I stopped. The look in his blue eyes was terrifying. There was no doubt he could close his fist and end my life right now, and he wouldn’t lose a single night’s sleep over it. As I swallowed, I could feel his fingers press in a little more as if he wanted to feel my throat working or maybe no longer working. At this point, I wasn’t sure.

“You don’t want to play? That’s fine. We don’t need to. I already know what I need to know.”

He pulled me forward by my neck as far as the bindings would allow. No amount of training would’ve ever prepared me for the moment the tip of his nose touched mine. We sat there staring into each other’s eyes, and with each passing second, my need to blink and look away increased.

“You should know, Sunshine, that I know you better than anyone. No one else has taken the time to study you and understand you as I have. I know what makes you tick, what dreams you have, what fills your soul with desire, what makes you wet at night, and what lines you’re willing to cross. I know it all because, unlike your mother or that poor excuse of a boyfriend you had, I’ve taken the time to learn the secrets you hold tight to your chest.”

“No one knows the real me,” I said.

Cain pressed his thumb into the soft tissue under my jaw until I was forced to look at him once more. “I do, Sunshine. You’ll see.”

He released my neck, and I had to fight every urge in my body not to rub where the feel of his fingers had been.

“What kind of gift basket do you think Peter would want? I really should send him something…oh, I know. I’ll get him a basket of cucumbers to play with. He seemed to really enjoy them last time.”

“It was you that did that to Peter.”

Cain laughed, and the sound chilled me to my core. Was that the sound he’d make when he finally took my life? Tears welled in my eyes. Crying was something I hadn’t done for a long time. I didn’t think I even knew how to cry anymore, but the tears spilled over now. My three months of Quantico training never could’ve prepared me for this.

“You ruined my relationship, humiliated me, and then capped it off by raping me.”

Cain’s face contorted as he snorted. “First, I may have been the final straw in the old proverbial cap, but we both know I didn’t ruin your relationship. You were kicking that useless wad of flesh to the curb, and I might add, Peter protested a bit too much, considering he came with a shuddering groan and proceeded to hump the bed looking for more. I thought your mental prowess was better than this, Kirby. I’m truly disappointed.”

The way he said the word ‘disappointed’ sat like acid in my stomach. There was no logical reason for my reaction, but I didn’t like the idea that he was disappointed in me. That couldn’t be normal. My mouth fell open, but I kept the list of questions to myself.

“Lastly, it wasn’t rape. Did what I described to you sound like rape? Dubious consent, maybe, but trust me, you wanted every inch I could stuff into that tight pussy of yours. It was begging to be fucked by a man that could give you what you wanted.” Pressing my lips into a firm line, I refused to say anything in response to his obvious gloating. “Go on, say what you want.”

I hated that he was able to read me so easily. It was a contradiction considering I used to complain that Peter didn’t know me at all, but this was different. I meant what kind of foods I like or vacations I’d want to go on, but Cain had an unnerving way of reading my thoughts. It was like he could actually get into my head with some superpower.

“No, you don’t want to ask? Okay, I’ll leave you alone, but only because you’re going to need your rest.” My heart fluttered harder. “The chains are attached to a rail system.” Cain pointed to the thick iron rods that lined the wall behind me, then disappeared around the corner. “You can move around as far as the rails will let you. The bathroom is around that corner, and there is a set of towels and a tube of toothpaste in there for you. I’ve also left something comfortable for you to wear, and I expect you to wear it. If you don’t, you’ll be punished, and just so you know, sometimes you’ll like the punishment, and sometimes you won’t.”

“Do I get to shower?” I asked, not even sure why I cared if I was clean.

The menacing yet sexy look was back on his face as the corner of his mouth lifted. “Already wanting to get wet?” His eyes slowly looked me up and down, and it was as intimate as if his hands were gliding along my skin. “Yes, you can shower.”

Without another word, he turned and walked away and out a large metal door that clanged with finality as it closed. The room was suddenly plunged into darkness, and as crazy as it was, I’d rather have him in the room with me than be on my own in this space where death seemed to breathe from every corner.

A single red light flicked on, and my body flinched. The chains jingled as I looked in the direction of the strange light. I watched the slow-moving red gloop inside the spaceship looking light and found it oddly hypnotic. I glanced around the room and took in the corner that I could see, and it was neat, clean, and shined, which would not normally be menacing, but my mind knew what kind of killer he was.

I’d suspected he was a psychopath from the images and the notes my mother had in her folder but looking into his eyes and seeing his space confirmed the suspicion. No amount of begging or pleading with his human nature would change the outcome of what was to come. There was no making the monster in him feel guilty because he didn’t have empathy or sympathy. They were words to him, the emotions non-existent.

The chances of getting out of this alive were slim, but if I had any chance, I needed to devise a different plan. There had to be a way to make him not want to turn my body into his next art project and dump it off in some random spot for the world to see.

Wrapping my arms around my legs, I pulled them in tight to my chest and let the question go as I allowed myself to cry. You were only supposed to see your life pass before your eyes when you died. Something dramatic like you fell from a bridge or were in a car crash. They never talked about how the same thing happened when you were captured by a serial killer and kept hostage like an animal.
