night rookie

I shut the light off and place my phone on the nightstand. Within a minute, I’m fast asleep, waking up a solid nine hours later with only one thing on my mind. The woman I can’t wait to get home to.

JOSIE

The couch welcomes me as I cover myself with a big blanket and settle in with my phone. My legs are exhausted after the extra yoga class today and a last-minute private session around lunch. Emmett should be flying in any minute. I open the video app and search for Emmett’s press interview in the meantime. I blink, double-checking the views, because over half a million overnight seems a bit ridiculous, considering he isn’t the star of the night. But he’s looking deliciously hot in a suit, and the video thumbnail will grab anyone’s attention. My phone tilts sideways as I crank the volume and begin to watch.

“If it isn’t the youngest Wheaton.” The woman clutches her microphone and places her hand on his shoulder. “You’re looking as charming as ever.”

“You’re quite the showstopper yourself.” Emmett steps back, giving her a once-over. I smile, enjoying their light banter until the questions progress.

“Rumor has it, you’ve been snagged as the last Wheaton sibling off the market,” she pries.

“Ugh…” Emmett smiles and rubs the back of his neck.

“The grapevine talks.” She laughs and pushes him to spill. “A pretty little redhead was spotted with you.” I shouldn’t be shocked at how intrusive this lady is, but he and I haven’t been much of a secret.

“Yeah, I’ve never been happier. I’m not ready to share her with the world yet. She’s a special one.” His eyes glow as the lights reflect off them. “She’s opened my eyes to self-worth and caring for others.” I grin like a fool, welcoming the loving warmth through my body, knowing every word is true.

“I can feel the love radiating off of you! Any mini heirs in the talks?” Her voices rises as she leans in, eager to be the first with exclusive information. The nerve these people have as they jump right to the personal questions.

“I haven’t even shared her name. You think I’m going to spill other details?” He laughs. “I will say, she’s going to be an amazing mother one day. I can picture six little heirs running around the hotel.” My smile drops, as my heart plummets like a boulder freefalling from a cliff.

“Six! That sounds like she’ll be busy.”

“I’ve got the energy to chase them around.” He rubs his hand over his jaw. “Nah, it’s her body. I’ll leave the quantity of children up to her.” Emmett’s cheeks hold a tinge of pink, and he looks to the camera and winks.

“He didn’t need to be that over the top,” I mutter out loud as the interview wraps up.
