Ollie caught Trevor’s eye. “What happened?”

“The kid passed if off four times. The last one was Bobby,or if not, it was his doppelgänger. He took the satchels into a men’s room in astrip mall in Panorama City. Didn’t come out. Turns out the damn thing had aback janitor’s entrance. I’m sorry, McKee. That fuck-up’s on us.”

“You didn’t know. You were following protocol. And at leastwe know he’s not with Courtney. I have a local team going after her now. He mayhave the bills, but he won’t have her. And we know who he is. We’ll get him.”

“We might not,” Trevor said after Ollie ended the call.“That kind of cash, he could be halfway to transport out of the countryalready.”

Ollie shook his head. “No. We’ll find him. I won’t haveCourtney living the rest of her life looking over her shoulder.”

Trevor stopped at a red light, then turned his attention toOllie.

“What?”

But Trevor said nothing. Just shook his head. Ollie wasabout to ask, but the phone rang again. “Tell me,” he said when the callconnected on the speaker.

“We’ve got her, sir. Unharmed. He had her tied to a bed. We’re cutting her loose right now.”

“Check for booby-traps.”

“Done and clear. We told her you were on your way. She’sunsteady, but clear. And she’s looking forward to seeing you.”

“Stay with her there. I’ll get her statement later, but Ineed to see her there.”

“Affirmative.”

“Thank god,” Trevor said, but there was something hard underhis voice. Frustration about Bobby, Ollie assumed. God knew he was frustratedabout the abductor’s escape act.

But they’d catch him. Ollie didn’t care how long it took, somehow, someway, they’d catch the son-of-a-bitch.

ChapterFifteen

“You’re really okay?” Ollie stood with his hands onCourtney’s shoulders, his gaze skimming over her as if he’d missed somehorrible injury.

But she was fine. She was truly fine.

“Yes,” she said, her smile in contrast to her puffy andbloodshot eyes. In one burst, she threw herself at him, her arms wrapped tightas he kissed her head. “I knew you’d find me. That’s what the FBI does, right?”

“We do indeed,” he said, looking over her head to meetTrevor’s unreadable eyes.

He frowned, mouthed, you okay?

Trevor nodded, then came forward to join them. “We want tokeep you under guard for a while,” he said, and Ollie wanted to kick himself.Of course, Trevor was focused on practical reality. Ollie was just floating onwaves of relief.

“You’ll stay with me for a few days. Hopefully we’ll haveapprehended him but then.”

She shuddered, then hugged herself. “I can’t believe Bobbydid this. I mean, I broke up with him because he was too clingy and, oh, Idon’t know. He just wasn’t right for me. Now I guess he wasn’t right in thehead. But I never expected anything like this.”

“No one does,” Ollie assured her, putting his arm around hershoulder and pulling her close. “But it’s over now. Or it will be soon. We willget him.”

“And if you don’t?”

“Then you’ll have to live with that. We both will. I don’tthink he’ll try for you again. He doesn’t seem like the type. I think he’lltake his money and run. But you never know. Can you handle that?”

She swallowed, but nodded. “I guess I won’t have muchchoice. But until we get there, I’m going to root for the good old FBI to catchhim.”

“And we will do our very best. The SSA, too,” he added, shooting another glance at Trevor, and again wondering about the crease in hisbrow and the frown in his eyes. “We’ve got good people working this. Right now,I want you to sit down with Denny. Tell her everything you remember. Start fromthe beginning and just run through it. You never know when something smallmight help.”

She nodded. “Yeah. I can do that.”
