“Did you have a good night? I haven’t taken anyone on a date in so long I wasn’t sure what the proper protocol was.”
“It was perfect. I don’t need or want anything fancy. Hot dogs in the park are better to me than a steak in a fancy restaurant.”
“I think that’s why I love you.”
I did it again. That damn L word. Why do I keep saying it to him when I’m talking? Am I in love with him already? Did Cupid shoot me with his arrow?
“I know it’s why I love you,” he says back and my heart races.
Be cool, Jake. He’s not saying he’s in love with me.
“Don’t freak out, Jake. I know you’re not in love with me.”
“Not yet, but I’m working on it,” I confess, not caring anymore. This relationship of ours is moving in fast forward anyway.
“My sister wanted me to tell you hi.”
“Oh, guess I have some brownie points with her.” I take a bite of my hot dog and ball up the empty wrapper.
“Yeah, she even wants me to bring you with me when I go see her when she has the baby.”
“When is she due? I don’t know if I can get the time off but if I can, I’d love to go.”
It’s just as big a step as him coming to my cousin’s wedding.
“A few weeks if she doesn't go into labor early. It’s her first, so the baby could be later. I’ll be heading home in a little over a week, just to ensure that I’m there.”
He’s going to be gone. But he made sure to tell me when he didn’t have to. And he invited me.
Victor leans in slowly enough that I have every opportunity to move away but I don't. His lips brush against mine, then he licks his tongue across them.
“Umm, you had a little bit of chili that I couldn’t resist tasting.”
When he pulls back, I find myself smiling.
“Ready to head to my place?” I ask as he takes the last bite of his dog.
“Yep, only if you promise we can make out when we get there?”
“Victor, baby, that’s most definitely on the menu.”
“Don't get cocky.” He tries to keep a stern look on his face but fails.
“Too late, you had my cock hard the entire movie.”
“Same.” He stands up, takes my hand in his and pulls me up. “Now, take me home and ravish me.”
I’ve never walked so fast in my life to get us back to my truck.
Chapter 15
Jake
The last two weeks have been amazing. It’s the only word I can think of to describe them. When we aren’t together, we’re on the phone talking or messaging each other. Sometimes it’s just a quick text to say we’re thinking of each other, and other times it’s long drawn out messages or conversations as we learn more about each other.
Victor has spent nights over at my apartment when I’m not on shift. He officially has a drawer and space in my closet, so he didn’t have to keep packing clothes and bringing them over. He even has a key to my apartment.
Some might think we’re moving fast, but I think everything is happening as it should.
