He just groaned. “What about the case? Anything new there?”

I shook my head, recounting what I’d been told before I gave Benji all my attention.

He sat up suddenly. “Hazi! Fuck! Where’s my phone?!”

I handed him the phone, knowing withholding it would only bite me in the ass later. Besides, he was allowed to call his boss.

“Shit. It’s turned off.” He got up from bed, his delicious ass on display as he searched for his charger.

“It should still be charged. I turned it off yesterday,” I admitted.

“Why?” he asked, glaring again.

“Because the dog called you and it was either that or throwing it out the window.” I growled low as I remembered how the alpha had rejected my perfect human. He didn’t deserve something as delicious anyway, and now Benji was mine.

“Oh,” he said, turning his phone back on. He groaned. “Yeah, twenty missed calls from Christopher, that can’t be good.”

He called his boss first and even though I acted like they were having a private conversation, they weren’t. I was listening to every word spoken and when Benji mentioned we’d bonded, his boss lost his shit. To my surprise, though, Benji hadn’t told the truth about how we’d bonded, leaving out the part where he didn’t really get a say in it. It warmed my heart that he would protect me like that, even from a puny human I could’ve easily killed. It could’ve also been that he was embarrassed by being forced. No matter, Hazi now knew and was adamant we would help out tonight.

According to Hazi, many had died yesterday and even with our new bond, which he thought was stupid fucking timing, we needed to help.

“Well,” Benji said once he’d ended the call. “I guess we need to get back out there tonight.”

I nodded, my mood a tad murderous. I’d looked forward to fucking my human for days.

I grabbed my phone and called Altaur. “Zar,” he greeted immediately.

“Master,” I greeted. “My bonded just spoke to his boss, it seems we need to cut our bonding time short.”

“Ah, yes. I heard. I wasn’t about to be the one telling you, though.” He laughed at his own joke. “You need to head into town and protect the library. If things keep going like this, we will demand to know what they’re protecting in there. If the alpha refuses to tell us, we will stop helping them.”

“It’s that bad?” I asked, stunned. We rarely left cases once we were involved. Only once the threat had been dealt with.

“This is war and they’re hiding something. We won’t spend days upon days fighting their battle if they don’t even give us the courtesy of telling us what we’re fighting to protect.” My master was a ruthless leader and it was at times like these where I was reminded just how brutal he could be. He didn’t care about the humans. He wanted respect and to know what we were protecting. I had to agree with him on that.

“You want us to get the truth out of the alpha?” I asked, already knowing the answer.

“You know me so well, my child,” he sighed proudly. “Get the information or we’re out of there.”

“You sure we can’t just say fuck it and let Christopher deal with his own mess?” I asked Benji as he got dressed.

He shot me a glare. “You know I don’t like innocent humans dying.”

“I do, sweetheart. But still, it would technically be the alpha’s fault if they did.”

That earned me another glare. “We’re going. You just need to stay in the car because of the sun.”

I tilted my head at that. “You truly don’t know about blood bonds.”

“I told you that already!” he snapped.

I smiled. Damn he was perfect. “Bonded vampires can walk in the sun.”

“Wait, really?”

I nodded. “It will be my first time in the sun in centuries without it burning.” I was rather looking forward to it.

“But if being bonded allows you to be out and about, why did you wait for so long before bonding?”
