I chuckled, feeling the effects of the champagne. “Maybe a little too good. I would never wear red. It’s too bold.”

“It’s perfect,” he said again.

I was ushered back into the changing area and put on my regular clothes. When I stepped out, Timothy was talking with the sales associate.

“Put it on my tab,” he instructed, his tone firm.

“It will be ready in a few days,” the seamstress promised.

We walked out of the shop. I tripped over nothing. “You’re a little tipsy in the middle of the day, Kitkat,” Timothy chuckled.

I couldn’t help but giggle, feeling the light-headedness from the champagne. “Maybe just a tad.”

“Why don’t we get an early dinner?” he said. “We need to get some food in you to soak up that champagne.”

“That’s probably a good idea,” I agreed.

We wound up at a rooftop restaurant, waiting for a table with what felt like a hundred other people. “It’s so loud,” I murmured.

Timothy flashed a playful grin. “If you want somewhere quiet, we can go back to my apartment.”

I pretended to be shocked. “Take me to dinner first, Timothy. Wine and dine me.”

“We’re literally out to dinner right now, Kitkat.”

“We’re waiting to be seated.”

It wasn’t long before we were shown to a table. He ordered us appetizers and more champagne, which seemed to defeat the purpose a little. I didn’t care. I was having so much fun being in the city with him. I did feel like a princess, even if it was just for one night.

Chapter Fifteen

Timothy

––––––––

“SO?” I ASKED AS WE finished with our dinner.

“So what?” she asked.

“Would you like to see my apartment?”

It was very clear what I was asking, but I didn’t want to be crass and just come right out and say it.

She laughed, a soft, melodic sound. “Why, Timothy,” she said, her eyes sparkling with mischief under the evening lights, “are you inviting me over?”

I leaned forward, looking her directly in the eyes. “Well, yes,” I admitted. “I mean, only if you want to. If you’re not up for a visit, I can take you back to the hotel.”

Her lips curved into a smile again. “I suppose I could stop by.”

I chuckled. “Yes, stop by.”

I paid our bill, and we left the restaurant. On the drive home, I watched as she stared out the window, trying to take in all of Manhattan. I knew how different it was from Sleepy Hollow. “Impressed?” I asked.

“Overwhelmed,” she replied. “It’s pretty, but I couldn’t do it. It’s so much. How do you sleep here?”

“I’m high enough above it that I don’t hear most of it. And you get used to it. If you don’t hear at least one siren every few minutes, it feels off.”

She laughed, shaking her head as she stared at me. “You city people are strange.”
