"I looked for opportunities to restore autonomy without increasing risk."

I realize halfway through the sentence that no one else in the room thinks that way.

So I explain. "Victims of coercive control lose choices before they lose freedom."

My eyes drift back to Maeve. "So I gave choices back whenever I safely could."

"Mrs. Gallagher consistently ordered French vanilla before her marriage. Mr. Gallagher replaced it with black coffee despite no documented change in preference."

Maeve's eyes shine. "So French vanilla began appearing at her door." I continue before emotion can interrupt the facts. "Her mother's visits had become increasingly infrequent."

I nod once toward Mrs. O'Donnell. "So I created opportunities for them to happen."

My gaze falls briefly to the sweatshirt Maeve is wearing. "And when Mr. Gallagher ordered personal belongings removed from the residence..." I pause. "...I kept them."

That one lands differently. "I assessed there was a high probability Mrs. Gallagher would eventually need reminders of who she was before isolation."

My voice stays steady. Because that's the truth. "Those items weren't evidence." They were something far more important. "They were hers."

Silence settles over the room. I don't fill it. Mission reports don't end with conclusions designed to make people feel better. They end when the facts are exhausted.

So I simply look at Cormac. "My objective was never to remove your daughter from her marriage." Another pause. "It was to return as much of her life to her as I could..." I glance toward Maeve one last time. "...until she was ready to take the rest back herself."

I draw a slow breath before continuing.

"The investigation remained observational until four nights ago." The room is still. No one interrupts. "Mr. Gallagher became aware someone had been interfering with his control over Mrs. Gallagher's routine."

I don't look at Maeve. I can't. "He discovered I had facilitated unauthorized contact."

Coffee. Her mother. Small things. Things that should never have required my involvement in the first place.

"It was the first time I observed him make threatening physical contact." My hands curl into fists before I realize I've moved. I force myself to keep talking. "His response was immediate."

Every variable changed overnight. "The residence entered complete lockdown. Phone access was terminated. Existing routines disappeared. Mrs. Gallagher stopped leaving the property entirely."

Every sentence feels clipped against the pressure building in my chest. "Every avenue of communication closed." Every one.

"I lost eyes on her." Those four words settle heavily between us.

"I couldn't determine whether she was injured."

Whether she'd been locked in a room. Whether she'd...No. Facts. Stick to the facts.

"So I adjusted surveillance." I swallow once. "I relocated to the tree line bordering the estate."

I see Wheels lower his head. Matt already knows this part. "I remained there for the next three nights."

Cormac's brows draw together. "I slept in my vehicle."

Because driving home wasted forty-three minutes each direction. Because if something changed...I needed to see it.

"I maintained visual observation whenever possible." Another pause. "At the same time, Grayline continued building a case."

I nod once toward Callum. "Our intention was to bring documented evidence to you."

Not accusations. Evidence. "We didn't believe you'd act on anything less."

The admission hangs in the room. It isn't an insult. It's simply the truth. Then...I close my eyes.
