And I was nervous. I couldn’t even remember a time I felt nervous with my ex-husband. At least not in a way that felt good.
After our night together at the club, things had changed between us. We melded our lives together much more easily than I thought. While I didn’t make a conscious effort to share her bed every night, it kind of just happened. We could barely keep our hands off each other. By the time we were done and exhausted, it was easy to just fall asleep wherever we were.
Her bed. My bed. The couch. And it never got awkward.
Putting all those thoughts to the side, I leaned against her, my lips brushing against her collarbone. It was as high as I could get it in our position thanks to our height difference.
“If you're a good girl after this, I'll let you fuck me in the car.”
Her eyes lit up, but the show started before she could respond.
The sound of a wailing guitar spread throughout the stadium.
“New York, are you ready?”
The crowd went wild and started to stand, so Jax quickly hoisted me up with her. I couldn't help but look at her with an excited smile.
Smoke filled the stage as the curtain pulled open for us to see the band already standing there. They jumped straight into a song that I didn't know, but the beat was heavy and fast, and the crowd was going crazy for it.
Including Jax, who was holding onto me and jumping with excitement.
This got a real laugh out of me. In my youth, I might have been embarrassed about the show we were putting on, but not anymore. Not when she was trying so hard to make sure I had a good time.
So, for once, I let go.
Jax sang along loudly but surprisingly well to songs I didn't recognize, and whenever she turned to sing to me, I tried my best to keep up. Even when I messed up the lyrics, she didn't laugh at me.
As the second song came to a close and they started addressing the audience, she leaned into me.
“So, am I making a fan out of you yet?” she almost screamed so I could hear her over all the noise.
I shook my head with a laugh.
“I have to admit they're pretty good, though I have nothing to compare it to.”
“What do you mean?”
I pulled her down so I could whisper in her ear. “I've never been to a concert before, so this one already takes the cake!”
She looked at me like I was crazy.
“Never?” The word barely reached my ears, but I could make it out.
“Never!”
Instead of judging me for that admission or making me feel weird in any way, she pulled me in front of her and held on just as they went into the third song.
“Well, then we better make this your best concert yet!”
It was. I already knew it was. And it had nothing to do with the band.
I’d missed out on a lot by being with someone who never really truly wanted to be with me. But here and now, I was having fun.
Jax wants me here. And I want to be here with her. No one else.
We allowed ourselves to get lost in the songs. We moved together. And I wasn't embarrassed about it at all.
I’d been so worried. About how different our lives were, if our age difference would look too obvious, and even if I was far too old to talk to someone like her without running out of things to talk about.
