He wasn’t supposed to be clean for a single day. He wasn’t supposed to make this insane deal a reality.

After a tense beat, he leans forward, elbows on his knees, and stares at me, his gaze challenging.

“Get it through your head. I am not that fucking bad, Harlow. It’s easy money. You should be thanking me.”

Slowly, I sit on the coffee table. “Nothing is easy with people who use drugs.”

“I won’t use.” The tension builds, but he breaks it. “Do you like my outfit?”

I furrow my brow, but look at his clothes. They are tailored and pressed perfectly.

“Yeah, I guess so,” I reply, unsure where he is going with this.

“It’s not my style, but I saw how you looked at my dad. You like business guys, huh?”

“What? No, I don’t!” I squint at him. “Wait, we are not discussing what I like in men. Okay?”

He doesn’t flinch. Just stares, making me squirm. I glance at the letter in my hands. “It says here I will be an at-home aide. Go there, and I’ll come to your place after I shower and change into my scrubs.”

He scowls, his dark eyebrows pulling together.

“No.”

“No?”

“No. I’m staying as long as I want. Then, I’ll drive you to my house, and after your shift, I’ll drop you off.”

“I have a car.”

“Mine’s better.”

I chuckle. “Everyone’s car is better. My door doesn’t open. I have to climb over the console. But that doesn’t mean I need people to drive me around.”

Killian is up fast, heading for the door. He scoops keys off the hook and slips outside.

What the—?

I hurry after him.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

He tries to open the driver’s door, but it doesn’t budge. He strides around it, climbing into the other side.

“Killian,” I say firmly. “What are you doing?”

“Got a toolbox, a coat hanger, and a soldering iron?”

“Huh?”

“I’ll fix it for you.”

“Ugh!” I reach into the car and tug on his arm. “Don’t you see? This is what I’m talking about. This is stressful. Even when my ex was sober, he crawled in his skin. He couldn’t stay still.”

Killian glares at me and stands from the car. I step back to give him space before he flings the door shut.

“So? He was sober, wasn’t he?”

“He was a handful, and I can tell you are, too.”
