“Nope.”
“Lover?”
She crosses her arms. “Definitely not.”
He matches her stance. “Ex-lover then.”
She flexes her jaw. “Unfortunately.”
He takes a step closer to her. “You know, if you were mated, Logan could take care of that.”
“How? By killing him?” Eme almost thinks it’s a good idea, especially if this is the beginning of how this will go. She has a feeling that Dillon’s phone calls won’t end with the one.
“What?” He laughs. “No, by ordering him away. There are perks about being the Head Alpha, you know.”
“So I’m learning,” she mumbles under her breath.
“Come on.” He reaches for her and puts a hand over her shoulder, steering her from the room. “You can unpack later. Let’s give you a tour.”
“Do we have to?” she whines.
“Yes.” He leads her out of the room and into the hallway. The hallway is spacious, and he stops her right away. “This is Logan’s room, directly across from yours.”
“You mean should I find I’m a damsel in distress?”
“Or,” he draws out the word, “should you find that you need a little sex.”
She slaps him on the shoulder.
“What?” he grins down at her. “I’m just being honest here. Wolves have needs. You should see Wayne on any given night. The man is insatiable.”
“Show me the rest of the house, you hound.”
They climb down the stairs, and over the next half-hour, Draven shows her where the living room is, the game room, the bathrooms, and Logan’s office, which Logan occupied while on the phone. They didn’t bother him.
Draven steers her toward the kitchen where a woman of Eme's age is busy, whistling as she washes the dishes. She’s just as curvy as Eme is.
The kitchen is large, possibly the largest room in the house. Beautiful wood cabinets take up most of the walls, and a white granite counter gleams brightly in the lights. The kitchen holds every stainless steel machine Eme could think of: a mixer, a pressure cooker, a toaster oven, a blender, and more she doesn’t know the name of.
“Do you cook?” Draven asks as they take a seat at the peninsula island.
“Oh, no,” Eme says while settling onto the stool’s cushion. “Cooking may be an art, but I have never had an interest in it.”
“Well, it’s a good thing Val is here then. She does most of the cooking for the alpha and any company he keeps.”
Eme gets the feeling that Logan and the ‘company’ he had kept is better left unsaid. She doesn’t need to know about his ex-lovers just like he didn’t need to know about hers.
The woman turns around, wet hands and all, and Eme takes her in. She’s short with a button nose and long blonde hair. Her bright blue eyes squint then widen at the sight of Eme.
She quickly wipes her hands on her black apron, rushes to the peninsula, and extends a hand.
“You must be Emeline.”
“Eme,” Eme says, taking the hand and shaking it.
“Eme, then. I’m Valentine, but everyone calls me Val. I hate the name, but according to my parents, I was conceived on Valentine’s day and -”
“Val,” Draven interrupts. “You’re going to scare her away.”
