Viola sobs, and Jim goes to her, wrapping her in his arms.
Logan sighs, rubs a hand down his face, and turns to Eme. “Are you alright?”
She lowers her hand and nods. “It’s just a lot. I’ve heard about wolfcalm. Everyone knows about it obviously, but I’ve never seen what it does . . .”
He steps toward her and cups the sides of her cheeks. The tear spills down her cheek, and he wipes it away with a thumb.
“Who else went to the city with Clark?” Wayne asks quietly.
Through sobs, Viola lists a few names.
“Wayne, go-”
“I’m already on it.” Wayne leaves the exam room and heads out of the clinic.
“Why don’t you two go wait in the waiting room and let the family have some time together,” Grace suggests.
Logan releases Eme and turns to the doctor. “I want to be here when he wakes up. I have questions that need to be answered.” Like who the hell sold it to him.
“Those questions will have to wait, Alpha,” Grace says sternly. They hold each other’s gaze until Logan relents. He grabs Eme’s hand and leads her to the waiting room.
They sit together, side by side. Silence stretches between them until Eme breaks it. “This is horrible.”
“It is.”
“What’s with you and Jim? Why don’t you get along?”
Logan sighs. “There are some that approve of me as Head Alpha and some who don’t. Jim believes I’m too young and too kind-hearted.”
She turns her head to look at him. “You suspected, didn’t you?”
“What do you mean?”
“You suspected that the teenagers brought home wolfcalm.”
He licks his bottom lip. “I suspected they did more than go to the university, yes. Jim should have never let them wander around.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
He finally looks her in the eyes. “I – we – you weren’t exactly in the receiving mood.”
“I still had the right to know,” she snarls. “You brought me here to be alpha, to be by your side, and I admit I haven’t exactly made it easy for someone to warm to until recently, but you should have mentioned it. This is my pack too. I’m responsible for them too.”
“You’re an alpha, but you’re not this pack’s alpha yet,” he says sternly. He shakes his head, worried that this anger might ruin what’s building between them. “But you’re right,” he admits. “As my future mate, at the very least, I shouldn’t have kept things from you.”
She leans back in her seat and rubs at her eyebrow. “Is there anything else you haven’t told me?”
Does he tell her? He decides to go with the truth, even though the truth may be their undoing. “Remember how Wayne said that it had been weeks until someone came onto our land? Well, someone has been coming onto our territory.”
She snaps her gaze back to his. “Who?”
“We don’t know. They're gone by the time we find their trail.”
“If you had to guess, who do you think it’d be?”
Anger seeps into his voice when he answers, “A rogue.”
Dawning crosses her face. “And you’re worried that they’re after your title.”
