Wayne grumbles under his breath. “They can’t have the whole city to themselves.”

“They do, and they don’t. They allow us to get our supplies from the city and for our wolves to attend the university. So far, that verbal treaty still stands. But enforcers questioning their people, they won’t stand for that.”

Wayne nods slowly. “So we just wait.”

“We wait,” Logan repeats. “We wait and see if the wolfcalm and the wolves encroaching our territory make any moves.”

“Why can’t you approach one of their wolves and find out if they’re the ones selling it? Surely, someone is leading them. Or someones.”

“As far as I know, no one is leading them. And that’s a dumb question.” Logan snorts. Wayne has asked this question many times before, and each time, Logan gives the same answer. He understands why Wayne feels the need, but answering him time and time again is off-putting. “They’re just like the teens. They’d never tell. We need evidence, Wayne. Evidence, and then I can do something about it.”

He chuffs. “Who else could possibly be selling it.” It wasn’t a question.

Logan says nothing. They both know the truth.

Wayne shrugs. “Maybe nothing will come of it. The teens. The territory crossers. Maybe we worry for nothing.”

“Maybe,” Logan says, drawing out the word, even though he doesn’t believe it. “Is that all?”

“For now.”

“Good. Go do what I asked.”

“Because you have a girl to attend to?” Wayne grins mischievously.

Logan slaps him on the chest with the back of his hand. Wayne cups the area with fake hurt.

“When are you going to tell her?”

“About all of this?” Logan asks. Wayne nods. “Right now, there’s no reason to.”

“She’s alpha too-”

“Not yet, Wayne. Things are just looking up. I don’t want to burden her more.”

“Okay, man.” He grasps his shoulder, turns, and jogs back the way he came.

“Don’t let Draven go back to the city, no matter what he says!” Logan shouts at him. Wayne waves, and Logan sighs before turning to the door and opening it. The scent of cinnamon rolls greets him, and he dips inside to find the woman he wants.

The bell chimes, and Eme watches Logan enter the diner. She had nervously fidgeted since he left her behind, but the booth she had picked was in a warm part of the café, and it had been inviting.

Watching him search for her, she wraps her hand around the warm mug and lets it chase away the remaining chill in her fingers. A gal had brought it by, a waitress whose name she already forgot, but she knew Eme. She even called her by her first name. Everyone seems to know who she is. When Eme walked by the filled tables, people nodded and greeted her with ‘good morning.’ She had smiled pleasantly at them before she found an empty space in an area that wasn’t crowded.

The entire time he was outside, she had wondered what he and Wayne were talking about, and for the entire time, people had stared at her inside the diner, including Becca, who sits in the corner with her friends, whispering to one another. Eme had ignored them when she walked in, shoving aside Becca’s sneers and disapproving mumbles to her buddies. She doesn’t need that drama in her life, and she could care less about what Becca thinks, but everyone else matters. Do they approve of her? Or do they hate her as much as Becca does?

She shouldn’t care, but there are a lot of wolves to win over in this pack, and she hasn’t exactly done anything to do so. She’s been too busy refusing their alpha – and their alliance. These thoughts put her on edge.

She studies Logan as he spies her, and he approaches with a smile on his face. The area seems smaller with him in it, and not because of her being more comfortable around him. No, every hour, she’s grown more and more comfortable with him. The area seems smaller because of his size. His broad shoulders, his narrow hips, his luscious lips. He commands the room just by his presence. It sends a shiver down her spine.

No. Eme says to herself. Stop that. Not here. It wouldn’t do to be lusting after her intended mate in the middle of breakfast.

He slides into the booth, the grin still on his face. “Sorry about that. Wayne had to update me on a few matters.”

“Oh? What matters?” She had the right to know after all. As soon-to-be alpha, she needed to get her footing on all matters of the pack. It makes her wonder why he had sent her into the diner as soon as Wayne approached.

“It’s nothing.” Logan waves a hand.

Eme brings the mug up to her lips and takes a sip. She cocks an eyebrow at him. She doesn’t believe a word he says, but she’ll leave it alone. If he wanted to tell her, he would have. Who knows, perhaps it is nothing. Perhaps the details would bore her.
