“I guess the better question is, do you want to?”

She shrugged. “Sometimes, yes; most of the time, no.”

“So stop.”

Her shoulders sagged. “It’s not that simple.”

“Could it be?”

“I don’t—I’ve never truly contemplated it.”

He looked around at the mess she’d made. “How long have you been at this?”

“Since this morning.”

“How about putting it up for today?”

Her phone started ringing again.

Nate broke their connection and leaned back, yanking the phone off the edge of the table.

Callie’s eyes widened as she shook her head. “No,” she hissed in a whisper. “Don’t.”

“Hello?” he answered. “This is Nate. Who’s this? Oh, hey, Gemma. No, Callie’s not available right now. She’s in the shower. Yeah, I just finished ravishing her—hot vacation sex, so she’s going to need at least twenty-four hours to recover…” He pulled the phone away from his ear and put it back. “Hello?” He shrugged as he ended the call. “Gemma hung up.”

Callie gaped, blinking at Nate. “You did not just do that.”

“I think we both know I did.”

“I can’t believe you did that.” She pressed her fingers to her temple, imagining the look on Gemma’s uptight, pixie-like face and started laughing. “What am I going to do with you?”

Grinning, he set down the phone. “Come to my place for dinner tonight instead of us going to the Inn.”

She nodded, loving the idea of not having to see anyone but Nate. “How can I say no?”

He knee-walked himself closer, sandwiching his body between her thighs as he stared into her eyes. “You can, but I don’t want you to.”

Butterflies invaded her belly and her pulse quickened, knowing that Nate was going to kiss her. “Are you sure you want to get mixed up with me?”

He nodded, trailing his fingers along her jaw the way he had yesterday.

She moved her hand, her arm brushing his gun as she settled her palm against his side. “I wasn’t kidding when I told you I’m a mess.”

“But you’re a beautiful mess.”

“I’m glad you think so,” she said on a whisper.

“Definitely,” he answered quietly, easing in slowly, touching his lips to hers.

She jerked back a little with the rush of nerves, holding his stare.

“It’s okay,” he whispered, capturing her mouth again.

She closed her eyes, allowing herself to savor the warmth—the undeniable magnetism pulling them together.

He took them deeper, diving in and making a sound in his throat as his hands wandered to her hips and up the sides of her waist.

She whimpered, turning to putty when he cradled her cheeks in his palms and went after her bottom lip with nibbles and tugs and a slide of his tongue. Nate Carter was one heck of a kisser.
