“I love you too.”

“I brought you some lunch—chicken noodle soup and grilled cheese. It’s in your office.”

He smiled, certain it wasn’t possible to adore her any more than he did right now. “Have I ever told you that you’re the best?”

She grinned. “I think maybe a time or two. I didn’t want you to be bombarded by questions.”

The easy moment faded. “I’m assuming you’ve heard the rumors?”

She nodded. “I don’t want to believe it. Even after my ride home with him, I don’t want to.”

Despite the amount of evidence to the contrary, he didn’t believe it. But for now, he had no intentions of sharing his thoughts with anyone. Especially Callie. Either Samantha Fletcher’s killer had seen to his own justice with a bullet to the head, or Samantha Fletcher’s killer had struck again. Because one way or the other, there was a connection. “How about another hug?” he suggested, wanting to change the subject.

She wrapped him up and held him tight.

He made a sound in his throat as he ran his hands up and down her back. “I have no idea how late I’m going to be tonight.”

“I’ll be waiting for you no matter what time you get in.”

He rested his cheek on her head. “I’m counting on that.”
