Nate smiled. “Sounds like Callie.”

Jeremy sipped his brew. “What can I do for you?”

He pulled the Sandersons’ cottage key out of his pocket. “I’m going to need a copy of this.”

“Sure thing.” Jeremy took the key and went over to the machine. “Beth said she saw the Tahoe out on the other side of the island this morning—parked by the old logging trail.”

It was hard to do much of anything without getting noticed by someone. “Did a little walking.”

Jeremy lifted his brow. “Now that’s dedication. It’s not exactly warm these days.”

Nate grinned. “It wasn’t too bad if you bundled up. I like the quiet. Hoofed it up to the abandoned cottage and back.”

Jeremy whistled through his teeth. “That’s quite a hike.”

Nate shrugged. “I won’t have to put myself through the paces on the treadmill tonight.”

“Certainly not.”

“I ran into Mini a few minutes ago. She told me you did some repair work out that way a few years back.”

“Years and years back.” Jeremy chuckled, shaking his head. “Gosh, that was a long time ago. I was just starting things up around here. Matthew knew I could use a hand so he and Thomas offered me the job.”

“I hear it was quite a mess.”

“That’s what I heard too. Although by the time I got out there, there wasn’t anything too crazy.”

Nate leaned against the counter. “I thought they put holes in the walls and broke windows—destroyed the furniture and stuff. Lit a rug in the living room on fire,” he improvised, wanting information specifically about the rug.

“The holes in the walls and windows I can attest to. The rug, however, I cannot. Most everything was gone except for a table and chairs, I believe.”

“No kidding. So the floor wasn’t burnt up or anything?”

Jeremy shook his head. “Don’t ever remember seeing any sort of burnt-up rug. Floor always looked fine to me.”

“Huh.” Nate shoved his hands in his pockets. “Brad and I were pretty young back then. Seems like all of the cool stuff happened before I can remember.”

Jeremy laughed.

Nate smiled. “What do I owe you?”

“Uh, five even.”

Nate handed over a five-dollar bill. “Thanks, Jeremy.”

“I’ll see you around.”

He left with far less information than he’d been hoping for. Currently, his new lead was turning out to be a bit of a dud. He headed toward the bakery, hoping Callie could help him get the case moving forward again. But how the hell was he going to bring up repressed memories?
