“Molly wasn’t too happy.”

“I bet.” He glanced at the paper on the table—her drawing of Molly’s side room. “What are you up to in here?”

“I’m taking advantage of the quiet before the lunch rush. Molly and I are coming up with some ideas for how we can utilize this space for our club. We’re thinking of doing something on Wednesday nights. From six to eight.”

He grinned, loving that this was going to happen. Callie was planting her roots. She appeared to be here to stay. “Awesome.”

“I agree.”

He rested his forehead against hers and slid his hands up her back. “I have some news.”

“I already know.”

He frowned, standing straighter. “You do?”

She nodded. “Rumor has it you’re a hunk. A mystery hunk,” she whispered next to his ear as she stood on her tiptoes.

Chuckling, he shook his head, well aware that he wasn’t going to be living that one down any time soon. “Uh, not quite. Detective Sanchez is out front.”

Some of the light left her eyes. “Oh. I didn’t realize he was coming.”

“Neither did I until Kay radioed out to me while I was responding to a call. We’ve been going over the files and looking at the tape. He’s going to take a copy and get it cleaned up for us.”

“That’s good.” She looked down, her restless fingers tracing the snap on his holster before she met his gaze again. “What does he think? Did you guys come up with anything?”

“Not yet. Today’s more about him getting the lay of the land—sort of like we did in Hartford on Friday.”

“Okay.”

“I figured you would probably want to meet him before he has to head back.”

She nodded. “Definitely.”

“I’ll introduce you.” He took her hand and they walked out into the main service area.

Detective Sanchez stood from his seat at the counter, offering a polite nod.

“Callie, this is Detective Diego Sanchez. Sanchez, this is my girlfriend, Callie Davis.”

Sanchez extended his hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Smiling, Callie returned his handshake. “And you. Thank you for coming all this way to take another look at my case.”

“Nate and I both want to help you find the answers—been looking for them for a long time.”

“I truly appreciate it. Can I get you anything? Maybe some coffee? The wind’s pretty bad out there today.”

Sanchez nodded. “I’ll take a cup. And a bowl of your ham and white bean to go.”

Callie frowned as she moved to the other side of the counter. “Won’t you join us here?”

Sanchez shook his head. “I need to be getting back before the weather gets any worse. My kids have something going on at school tonight—senior stuff.”

She washed and dried her hands before she moved to the coffee station. “You have twins?”

He nodded. “A boy and girl.”

Callie smiled. “That must be fun.”
