“Don’t say a word to me. Get out of the way or I will mow you down.”

Both guards got out of his way. He ran with Charlotte, holding her tightly, and soon he was outside the building, the rain was falling, and he didn’t wait for the limo to be brought to him. He could see it parked nearby, with rain pounding down on top of it. He raced for the vehicle.

Barney threw open his door and jumped out of the driver’s seat. He hauled out an umbrella, then ran to meet Logan. “Boss! Boss, what’s happening?” The umbrella bobbed. Barney tried to shove it over Logan’s head.

“Get the limo started,” Logan barked back at him. “Then haul ass to the nearest hospital. As fast as you can go, understand me? Take us there.”

Barney rushed to keep up with him and to keep the umbrella over Logan’s head.

“Over her,” he snapped.

The umbrella nearly clocked him as Barney adjusted it to better cover Charlotte. “What’s wrong with her?”

“I don’t know. I think she was drugged.”

Barney cursed as he opened the limo’s back door.

Logan surged inside, never letting go of Charlotte.

“Someone made a fatal mistake,” Barney said, voice angry.

Logan looked up at him. “Yes. Someone sure as hell did.”

Barney slammed the door and ran back around the limo.

Logan’s chest was too tight. Each breath hard. His grip was too fierce on her, he knew that. He should relax. He should spread her out on the seat near him, but Logan could not seem to let Charlotte go.

His heart raced. His blood boiled. He wanted to destroy.

But first, first he had to protect. Protect her.

“The limo will be faster than an ambulance.” His fingers went to Charlotte’s throat. Her pulse was still thready, but maybe better than it had been before? “I’ve got you. You’re safe.” I am going to seriously chain you to me after this. There will be no escape for you. “You will be fine, do you hear me?”

She didn’t speak.

Her eyes were closed.

Fear threatened to choke him.

His fingers remained at her throat, needing to feel her pulse, as the limo screeched from the scene.

The privacy screen lowered. “What do you want me to do?” Barney demanded.

“Keep driving. Fast. Call nine-one-one. Tell them a woman was drugged.” She must have been drugged, right? “Ask for Detective Reece. Make the dispatcher connect you to her.” Could the dispatcher do that? He had no clue, but he wanted Detective Meredith Reece on the case. She pretty much hated him, but she was a good cop. “Give the detective Ares’s address and tell her to go in with a full team. The building needs to be searched, from top to bottom.” She’d need a search warrant for that, though, dammit. Ares is hiding something in that building. The cops need to examine every inch of the place.

“Logan.” Barney cleared his throat. “You know what you’re doing? Calling the cops…on Ares? On a private game with him?”

“She’s unconscious. He’s going to pay. Either the cops get him or I go back and murder the sonofabitch myself. Which option do you like better?”

“I’ll get the detective.” An immediate response.

“Yeah, good. Do that. And drive faster.”

The screen rose again. As it was lifting up, he could hear Barney’s voice, connecting through the Bluetooth as he called nine-one-one for help.

Logan kept Charlotte cradled in his lap. “It’s okay.” Her pulse beat beneath his fingers. “It’s okay.” With his left hand, he grabbed for his phone. No phones were allowed in private events hosted by Ares, so he’d left his device in the back of the limo. Just as Charlotte had left hers.

Logan fired off a quick text.
