Jeremy hated that David wasright and that he could never win an argument with him. Fuckinglawyer. “What the fuck am I supposed to do now?”
“What do you want to do?”David asked.
“Run away.”
“So, take thejob.”
Jeremy sighed. “I tried andit didn’t work.”
David frowned. “What do youmean? Did they change their mind or something? Can they dothat?”
Jeremy could see David’slegal brain spinning, reviewing what he knew about contract law andjob offers. “No, they didn’t change their mind. I’ve tried to pickup the phone and call to accept the job at least ten times sincethe other night. I’m physically incapable of doing it.”
“What does that say?” Davidgave Jeremy a pointed look that made him want to chuck an apple athim.
“That I’m an idiot?” Wow,could he sound any more bitter?
“No dear, it says you don’tactually want the job,” David said, his tonepatronizing.
“I wish I could just runaway and not have to think about all this anymore.”
“Really?”
Jeremy shrugged. “I got anoffer on the house.”
“What?”
“It just came in thismorning.”
David’s expression changedfrom self-satisfied to concerned. “Don’t make a hastydecision.”
“If I had the money for thehouse along with what I’ve already inherited, I could just travelfor a while. Fuck off and do whatever I wanted.”
“And then what? You’venever been reckless.”
Why was David being so damndifficult? “Taking time off to travel isn’t reckless. Adventurous, yes, but you’re always saying I should be moreadventurous.”
David sighed. “Do I reallyhave to be the sensible one here?”
“Apparently, you do,”Jeremy said. “I think you had to take on that role the last time Ibroke up with someone.”
“You and Connor didn’tbreak up. You just stopped talking to him.”
David hadn’t seen the lookin Connor’s eyes when he’d confronted Jeremy that night. “It’s notlike he’s called me.”
“It’s only been twoweeks.”
“Yeah, but I went overthere. I tried to talk and—”
David snorted. “Talk? Idon’t think that’s what you did. And he was angry. Now he probablyassumes he blew it. He’s not going to call you.”
Jeremy realized he’dforgotten to put lemon juice on the apple he’d chopped and it hadturned brown. Fucking perfect. “So I’m supposed to just givein?”
“Do you really want to walkaway? You love Connor, I know you do.”
“I…” Jeremy couldn’t denyit, but he wasn’t going to set himself up to be rejected againeither. “Fine, I love him, but that won’t make things work betweenus.”
“Don’t accept the offer onthe house without talking to him.”
