My sight finds the wall full of windows; it makes an impression! The view makes this room even more special. We have a clear outlook over a lake, don’t know which one, gleaming under the late morning sun. The trees have all gotten their leaves back, filling the scenery with different shades of green. I’m sure it becomes even more beautiful in the summertime when wildflowers will add a pop of color. The room feels joyous. I can tell it’s clearly someone’s happy place.

“This room is magnificent,” I utter.

“Thank you,” Kit says while claiming a seat at the table. Levi drops into the chair beside her.

I hate the tinge of doubt that makes me say this next, with faked gusto: “You’re sure you even need my help here?”

“Of course we need you, dear.” Kit elbows Levi, who appears remorseful at her side. Finally, some decency!

He bobs his head. The gesture looks genuine enough.

My doubt tucks itself away into its favorite warm pocket.

I take a seat on the opposite side of the table.

“Okay, then. Let’s get down to business.”

Any questions?”

I’d humored Kit and did as she asked and not shown her any of my ideas prior to this meeting. It was unconventional and caused many restless nights, but it was electrifying, getting her first impression in the flesh.

These days, most of life takes place behind a screen; this is a nice change. Even if my heart is thumping in anticipation.

Kit takes her time before answering, looking over everything carefully.

Then, her sharp focus lands on me.

Oh gosh, she hates it!

I’ll have to change name. Get a new identity. Become a blonde. This will mark the end of my design career. I’ll never recover. There will be no getting over it. I am not built to move on.

“I love it,” she finally says. Levi rolls his eyes, entertained by her theatrics. That makes one of us.

I breathe better instantly. Blond hair would not suit me. Phew. Crisis averted!

“That’s great!” My voice is pitched too high—internal spiraling will do that to me.

“I knew you’d be perfect for the job.”

“Thank you!”

Since my stomach is now emptied out of nerves, I consider reaching for one of the homemade carrot cake cookies from the tray. But what if I get crumbs everywhere? That would be embarrassingly unprofessional.

“So, how long do you think it will take to finish the cottages?” I swapped the cookies in my line of sight for Kit.

“Well, since we are starting with new builds, I’d say we should be done by the end of May.”

I’ve been communicating with Kit for months now. Prior to my coming here, I helped her select some of the finishes for the two cottages and recommended all the new drywall be painted white to start fresh. I planned on adding a lot of color, but it would go a long way to have both spaces be blank canvases.

“Is your handy man coming by today? I’d love to meet him and go over my plans.”

Her head dips toward Levi. No. Please—no.

“You’re looking at him.”

“Levi, is your handy man?”
