“A hot asshole,” Dawson pointed out.
Betrayal spiked his heart. “No! Don’t say that!”
“Say what?” Dawson looked confused.
“You called him hot,” Luca accused.
“I was just repeating what you said,” Dawson said.
Oh! Damn it. “He’s not even that hot.”
“Then why are you obsessing over him?” Dawson cocked his head.
“I’m not obsessing!” Luca defended. He wasn’t. Brad being around just irritated him. Like the look of disdain that Brad sent his way that morning.
“You glare at him every time he steps into the coffee shop. As the manager, you should be nicer to the customers.”
“The customers love me,” Luca argued.
“Does Brad?”
“Now you’re just being mean,” Luca accused.
“You brought him up,” Dawson said. “Again.”
Crossing his legs, Luca rested his elbows on his knees. “It’s not fair.”
“What really happened?” Dawson asked.
“We were getting hot and heavy. I’d just spent hours playing in the nursery so I wasn’t exactly in the right headspace for a club hookup. I just couldn’t resist him.”
“He did something,” Dawson’s voice came out hard.
“I called him Daddy,” Luca revealed quietly. “You should have seen the look on his face. He was disgusted.”
“I’m sorry, Luca.”
Luca smiled. This was supposed to be about bringing Dawson out of his head. “It’s fine. Anyway…” He trailed off, hoping that Dawson would take this as one of the rare times he shared what had led him to the beach that morning. It was usually hit and miss with how Dawson reacted after an episode, as he called them.
“Just a bad dream,” Dawson said softly.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t home.” Luca had known it wouldn’t be long before Dawson woke. He should have checked before he left, just in case.
“You’re not my keeper. I’m an adult,” Dawson said bitterly.
“No, I’m better than a damn keeper. I’m your bestie!”
That brought a smile to Dawson’s face. “I’m a decade older than you.”
Luca hummed sadly. “It’s a shame you had to wait so long for me to enter your life. That’s okay. I’m here now.”
Dawson shook his head. “I’m hungry.”
“How about pancakes. I could demolish some pancakes,” Luca responded with a grin.
“I’m in.” Dawson finally released the death grip he had on his legs.
Luca rose, smacking the sand off the ass of his suit before offering his hand to help Dawson up.
