He was here.
He came to see me almost in a reverse wish him luck scenario.
And he left something to remember him by.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Lachlan
Navarro is within my sights.
That damn orange car. The one I’ve been chasing all fucking race.
I push the button and engage the DRS.
C’mon, baby. C’mon.
There is a surge of power as I pull up and begin to pass him on the right. I’m half a car length into him when . . . nothing.
The engine has no oomph. No real power to overtake.
He surges forward as I slip back behind him and into his slipstream.
“Fuck!” I shout to no one in particular.
Classic fucking par for the season.
This goddamn car is a piece of shit. All goddamn year. It’s making me a tenth-place driver when I’m a top-fucking-four.
Come. The. Fuck. On.
I need this overtake. Especially against Gravitas. Against Schilling. For so many more reasons than just this goddamn race.
“Henry,” I grit out into the radio. It’s all I need to say for him to know how frustrated I am.
“I know. Next straight we go again.”
“Ten-four.”
But it doesn’t feel like ten-four. It feels like a million kilometers away and I’ve only traveled five of them.
“Rossi’s behind you.”
“Okay?” As in okay, are you telling me I need to give way to him? Or as in okay, he’ll block for you?
Because each one has a different set of consequences and a different dynamic that states exactly where we both stand with this team.
“Johann will make the call,” he says.
Great. A fucking wait and see. Just what I fucking want.
Out of your head, Lach. Focus. Fucking focus.
I take each curve, shaving the distance as thin as possible. I practically kiss the wall. I ride the white line. I cut across the switchback with the closest of margins. Anything to get me fucking closer to Navarro. Anything to get me farther from Rossi.
“You’re within point oh five,” Henry says in my ear. “DRS in three. Two. One.”
I engage the DRS system. “C’mon, baby,” I murmur, knowing damn well that if I have DRS on Navarro, then Rossi could easily have DRS on me.
