Her laugh is as seductive as her words. “Anticipation is foreplay to pleasure, Evans.”

Jesus. I am one lucky man.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

Lachlan

“Save me.”

“Zola.” I chuckle. “Always dramatic.”

“But can you blame me? My mother is breathing down my neck saying I have to give Baron a few more chances. I don’t want to give him more chances. I want him to—”

“I can’t blame you. No.” I feel sorry for you.

“Then you’ll go with me to the dinner?” she asks like I know exactly what she’s talking about.

“Your mum is beginning to think this is a real thing.”

“Isn’t that the point?” she asks.

“Yes, but . . . when she finds out it isn’t . . .”

“When she finds out it isn’t—nothing. She loves you. She’s pushing for you to be on the team. Just let it all fall into place and then we’ll figure it out.”

“Zola. The last thing I want is—”

“A contract?” she laughs. “Come on, Lach. With my dating history, it’s perfectly reasonable for me to fall in like with someone one minute and then out of it the next. That’s exactly what will happen. Let’s get through the gala and then—”

“The gala?” She never said anything about the gala.

“Yes. Pretty please?” she says in that deceptively timid but I’m going to convince you way she has.

“What if I already have a date?”

“You don’t. You’re keeping the girl you’re head over heels with a secret, so I know you don’t have one.”

I open my mouth and then close it. She’s right. And I hate that she fucking is. My heavy sigh fills the line.

“That means it’s a yes. You’re the absolute best, Evans. I’d kiss you for it, but your girlfriend has already been tolerant enough of me borrowing you, so I won’t push my luck.”

“I wouldn’t. She has claws,” I tease.

“I’m sure you enjoy her scratches.” She chuckles. “It’s always the quiet ones who are the freaks behind closed doors.”

“Whatever,” I say, but I laugh.

“Which is why you’re saving me from Baron von Steubing. Yuck.”

“I’m going now, Zola.”

“You know you love me.”

“Love is a strong word,” I tease.

“Well, you’ve got two more dates to fall out of it with me. So that should be easy for you.”

When she ends the call, I simply shake my head. The woman is a force to be reckoned with. No doubt.
