“Milan, listen to me.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what happened.”
“Then explain it.”
He ran his hands over his face.
“It got out of control.”
I let out a short laugh.
“Six years in prison got out of control?”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Then tell me what you meant.”
Malcolm looked at the floor. I waited.
“Jeremy was going to ruin everything.”
When he said it, the truth just sounded ordinary.
“Everything?”
“The company. The developments and the investors. Everything we built.”
“What were you doing?”
He didn’t answer.
“Stealing?”
His jaw tightened.
“Moving money.”
“That sounds like stealing.”
“You don’t understand business.”
“I understand murder.”
Malcolm looked at me.
“I didn’t mean to kill him.”
My heartbeat slowed instead of speeding up. I had pictured hearing those words for years, but now they felt almost disappointing.
“You pushed him.”
“He came at me.”
“So you pushed him.”
“He fell.”
