“You look happy.”

“I am.”

China reached out and touched my arm.

“Milan, I know this is weird.”

“Which part?”

Her smile faded.

“The wedding.”

I raised my eyebrows.

“Your wedding is weird?”

“You know what I mean.”

I did know. But I wanted her to say it. She glanced around the lobby and lowered her voice.

“Me and Malcolm.”

Hearing her finally say his name felt strangely satisfying. I acted like it didn’t bother me.

“It’s been six years, China.”

“I know.”

“A lot can happen in six years.”

Her eyes searched mine.

“You’re okay with this?”

No, I was only okay with her thinking I was. I shifted the strap of my duffel bag on my shoulder.

“You invited me to be your maid of honor. I assumed you didn’t do that expecting me to tackle you at the altar.”

She laughed, clearly relieved. I noticed it right away. China had been nervous about me coming home. Good. She should’ve been.

“I missed you,” she said.

I wondered if she wanted me to say it back. I spared her the awkwardness.

“I need to check in.”

“Oh, right. Of course.”

She reached for my suitcase handle, but I pulled it away.

“I’ve got it.”

Her hand fell back to her side, but China recovered quickly.

“Everyone’s upstairs. We have the rehearsal dinner tonight, and tomorrow will be busy. Hair starts early, pictures are at four, and the ceremony is at seven.”

“I remember the schedule.”
