I hit the starter and the engine roared beneath me.

Ma lifted her mug in goodbye, and I backed out of Hazel’s driveway and turned toward the dead end.

Toward the clubhouse where I belonged. Where shit made sense.

I accelerated down the road. Ma disappeared behind me. Hazel’s house disappeared with her.

I should’ve felt better. I’d done exactly what I’d planned to do.

I’d wanted Hazel. I had her.

Simple.

Except nothing about this morning felt fucking simple.

Hazel hadn’t asked me to stay. Hadn’t asked when she’d see me again. Hadn’t looked disappointed when I told her I was leaving. And instead of being relieved about that, I’d stood in her bathroom waiting for something I couldn’t even fucking name.

I tightened my hands around the handlebars. What in the fuck just happened?

Chapter Seventeen

Hazel

Two days after sleeping with Bone, I was carrying a tray of empty beer bottles across Bing’s and trying to decide if the man at table seven had actually fallen asleep or if he was just really committed to staring at the tabletop.

I slowed as I passed him. His chin was almost touching his chest. Definitely asleep.

“CL,” I called when I reached the bar.

He looked up from wiping down the counter. “What?”

“I think I lost one.”

He frowned. “Lost one what?”

“Customer.”

Kori walked up beside me with two empty glasses in her hands. “Did somebody leave without paying?”

“No. I think he passed out.”

CL immediately looked toward my section. “Table seven?”

“Yep.”

“He does that.”

I stared at him. “What do you mean, he does that?”

“Frank.”

That explained absolutely nothing. “Okay.”

“He works third shift, but a lot of the time he works a double.”

“Still not helping.”

Kori leaned against the bar. “He comes in after work, has two beers, eats a burger, and sometimes falls asleep.”
