“Of course, my laird,” she simpered and offered him the tray from the table. He nodded, and she sat it on the table next to him. “Well, if that is all, then I will get ready for bed.”
Yes, he would not mind staring at his wife preparing for bed while he ate. “Dinnae let me stop ye.”
Standing in front of the glowing hearth, she turned her back and undid the sash on her dress. A few buttons later, and the dress hung on her frame. Jillian let it drop to the floor. The light from the fire shone through the shift beneath, highlighting the silhouette of her body, and he found he couldn’t even reach for a single morsel on the tray.
All he wanted was her.
Finally, the shift dropped, leaving nothing but her naked body. Turning, she smiled seductively at him and lifted her chin. “Do ye have any objections, my laird, if I rest my head now?”
Immediately, he pushed the tray aside and sat up. “None, whatsoever.”
“Excellent.” She walked toward him, reminding him a little of the grace of the deer in the woods until she was next to him, and then she reached for his face, cupping his cheek. “Enjoy yer rest, my laird.”
Enjoy his what? He blinked, frowned.
And Jillian strolled right through the door that joined their two rooms and closed it firmly behind her.
In shock, he stared at it. Since moving to the keep, she hadn’t once slept in her room, and she’d gone mad if she thought that was going to start now.
Growling, Graeme leaped from his bed, knocking over the tray of food, and was at the door in two bounds. Throwing it open, he stepped in and glowered at the figure blinking innocently at him from the bed.
“Is something the matter, my laird?”
“Aye,” he hissed. “It turns out that I married a vixen, and now I will go to bed hungry because my food is all over the floor.”
“That is a pity.” She widened her legs. “Perhaps there is something else you might feast on instead?”
He was on her before she could even shriek. She tried to rise and scramble away, but he just pushed her easily back onto the bed and placed his mouth directly on her warm, wet sex.
Her moan was music to his ears, and he did feast on her, more than pleased that she was so ready for him. When her thighs clenched and shook around him, he finally released her and slid up her body. “The next time ye think to sleep somewhere other than my bed, I wilnae be so nice,” he whispered in her ear as he slid his erection across her slit.
“Perhaps I dinnae want ye to be so nice.”
Snarling, he slammed into her, grunting with pleasure as she welcomed him. Pleasure unlike anything he’d ever known settled in a haze around him, and he rode her, deep and fast and desperately to claim that part of her he feared he would never reach.
Jillian moaned, clung to him, raked her nails along his back, and shouted his name when she shattered, and after he’d spilled himself deep inside her and gazed into her eyes, he hated that there was still that flicker of uncertainty.
The room was cold. Rising from the bed, he picked her up and carried her back to his room, where the fire would warm them through the night. After cleaning them both, he pulled her close.
“What about yer dinner?” she whispered sleepily.
“I am sated, for now, Wife. Go to sleep.”
Only when her breathing settled and her body stilled did he allow himself to relax and wonder just what had taken over him to make him need not only his wife’s body but also her trust so desperately.
And how far he would go to get it.

When Graeme arrived at his mother’s cottage the next day, she greeted him with an innocent smile while she stirred her tea. Behind her, Annella and her two children were at the dining table. Annella took one look at him and froze.
“Mother. Sister,” he greeted politely. Davy and Christy both shrieked with joy upon seeing him and launched themselves at him. He caught them easily, hefting them up, and allowing them both to give him kisses, ask him a million questions, and tell him that they’d met his new wife and she was so pretty and how come her hair was that strange white color when she was so young?
“Children, leave Graeme be,” Annella ordered. They quieted, and Graeme put them down. Trying his best to remember their questions, he answered them as best as he could.
“Jillian has hair that color because it is her special trait, just like each of ye have special traits,” he said finally, unwilling to tell them that most thought her light blonde hair was the mark of a witch.
Appeased, they went back to the table, and Graeme scowled at his sister. She was so rarely home, and he knew it was because of Alan, but still, she would never admit it. “Sister. What are ye doing here?”
