“The kind we don't discuss.”

Nova’s grin widened. “Oh, come on. You can’t stop there.”

He sighed. “Fine. I ended up buried in the snow.”

She stared at him. Then burst out laughing.

“Glad you’re enjoying this,” he grumbled.

“I’m sorry.” She covered her mouth, although it did absolutely nothing to hide her laughter. “Were you buried on purpose?”

“No.”

That made her laugh harder.

Snow rolled his eyes. “There was a drop-off I didn’t see. One second I was upright, the next I was ass-deep in a drift, and apparently watching me disappear was the funniest thing my teammates had ever witnessed.”

“So they called you Snow.”

“It stuck.”

“I love it.”

“Of course you do.”

Her laughter gradually faded as she studied him. “Which do you prefer?”

He shrugged. “It doesn’t really matter. The guys call me Snow. My family calls me Gabe. I’ve answered to both for so long I don’t think about it anymore.”

Nova nodded but didn’t say anything else.

Before he could wonder why she had asked, her expression shifted.

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

Every relaxed muscle in Snow’s body immediately tightened.

“What?”

“After I finished my call with Mr. Silverman, Brett asked me to come into his office.”

Snow straightened. “He did what?”

“I know, it kinda made me nervous. Actually, it scared the crap out of me because for about thirty seconds I was convinced he had figured out I’d been in there.”

“What did he want?”

“He gave me some additional files he claimed he had located and thought I might need to review.”

Snow frowned. “That’s it?”

“Not exactly.” She dipped her spoon back into the ice cream. “I think the files were just an excuse to talk to me. He asked a lot of questions.”

“What kind of questions?”

“Personal ones. Where I lived. Whether I traveled a lot for work. How long I had been with the firm.” She paused. “Whether I was seeing anyone.”

Snow’s jaw tightened. Of course he fucking did.
