My eyes only threatened to close when his right hand reached back, his index finger digging into my ass until he found my puckered hole.
“Oh, oh, oh,” I stammered between bated breaths, anticipation rising as he worked his finger inside me.
An animalistic need took hold of me when his blunt finger probed my ass. I caught my reflection on the floor-length mirror across the room, and for a moment I didn’t recognize the stranger staring back at me.
I looked like a woman reaching for nirvana, the furthest thing from being unaffected by this man’s efforts. If anything, I was on fire and completely engaged. Kai had somehow touched the depths of my soul, a part I didn’t know existed.
It was my last thought before I exploded with a violent climax that blurred my vision.
I went limp, ready to collapse. But he held me still, moving me to his will and fucking me until he followed me into the same abyss. Only then did he release me and let me succumb in his arms. We panted in unison, our breathing loud over the hum of the air conditioning.
What the hell just happened?
He fucked me after promising me that he wouldn’t. He was a liar, and so was I, since I came for him twice. Was my love for Stefan so weak that I surrendered to another man within one night? Or was Kai’s sorcery so powerful that he could mold your mind? He had barely put in any effort, and I was eating out of the palm of his hand.
The last shred of my dignity had turned into dust, yet it seemed Kai was more affected than I was. He was trembling, and his eyes had darkened to a threatening black, more beast than human. He appeared to be restraining his inner demons, like he was toeing the thin line instead of taking me again.
“You lied to me,” I accused once more, refusing to let it slide.
He faced the ceiling, eyes closed. I thought he was asleep until his quiet confession filled the room. “I wanted you to be mine from the moment I laid eyes on you. But then I learned about you two.”
I stopped breathing, and my mind went blank.
He opened his eyes and faced me with his black, dilated pupils. “Try not to hate me for this, because there was no other way of making you mine.”

STEFAN
When I flew to Tanzania for Obsidian Magazine, I convinced myself it was for the best. I needed space during Amelie and Kai’s first week as a married couple. The thought of them together left a sour taste in my mouth, but not knowing what transpired between them was a torture of its own. The trip was a godsend. Ironically, it was courtesy of Kai, the same man I wanted to avoid.
Sure, I convinced Amelie to say yes to Kai’s proposal, but turning the hypothetical into our reality was a thousand times harder. Suddenly, everything was too real, our future uncertain, with too many questions swirling in my mind.
Did they have sex on their honeymoon?
Did he hold her in his arms after?
Would she eventually fall in love with him, or did her heart only belong to me?
My stomach turned, and I closed my eyes.
No.
Letting myself dwell on the unknowns would make me spiral. I forced myself to focus on what we had gained instead—a clean slate, no debts, and financial freedom.
The children had just returned from a fancy sleepaway camp, a luxury we could not have afforded in the past. They were overstimulated by their welcome-home gifts and were tuckered out after hours of unwrapping toys and playing video games. Last Christmas, I bought them gifts from the dollar store, and their reactions matched the price tag. I had never spoiled them before, and Amelie was my next target. The first thing I did after returning from Africa was shop for my family. I glanced at the shopping bags on the coffee table.
