“Of course not. I’m not so old that I don’t realize these things happen no matter how careful you are.”

It sounded like she was talking from experience, but Abe wasn’t about to ask her to elaborate. “I had no idea he existed.”

“I know you would’ve done the right thing if you had known.”

Why was she being so understanding? Allie tickled Kai’s thigh, making him giggle. The woman loved children. She had six of her own and now had five—make that six grandchildren. His mother was a natural and would help him through this.

“Thank you, Mom.”

She smiled at him. “None of that. I’m not going to raise this child for you. But I will help you until you get adjusted to the situation. Then, while you’re at work, he can stay with me. But for any of your outside activities, you’ll need to find help.”

“Yes, ma’am. There is still a chance he’s not mine.”

Allie looked at Kai, then at Abe. “This child is definitely yours.”

“Damn.”

She covered Kai’s ears. “You’re going to need to work on your language, Abraham.”

He said, “Yes, ma’am,” again, then got to his feet. “How am I supposed to raise a baby here?”

“The two of you are going to stay with me until you get this place baby-proofed.”

“Baby-proofed?”

“Gentry can help you with that. Does Kai have anything aside from what he’s wearing?”

“He came with a bag and a car seat.”

“That’s a start. I have some of Levi’s things. We’ll fix this little darling right up. Now, go pack some things for yourself, and we’ll go home.” When Abe didn’t move, she looked at him. “Honey?”

“I don’t think I can do this, Mom.”

“Of course you can.”

“I don’t know if I want to do this.”

She cocked her head. “That you don’t have a choice on. Careful or not. Surprise or not. The minute you did what you did to create a child, he became your responsibility.”

Abe refrained from saying, “Yes, ma’am,” and just nodded his head.

“Now go. I’ve got dinner to prepare for your father.”

“Does he know about…him?”

“I told him what Justin told me before I came over.”

Abe got his feet moving and headed for the bedroom.

“Honey, why are you limping?”

“Limping?” He looked down at his leg. “I had an accident about a million years ago.”

“Accident?”

He waved a hand at her. “It doesn’t matter anymore.” He started walking again but stopped when Kai said, “Papa.”

He turned back. “That’s what he called his grandfather.”
