“You’re right about one thing: you two aren’t on the same page relationship-wise.”
Abe leaned against a stack of boxes. “So, what am I supposed to do?”
“Quit being an asshole for starters.”
“Right.”
“And talk to her.”
“What good will that do?”
Gentry put a hand on his shoulder. “Abe, trust me, talk to her. Clear the air. Tell her how you feel.”
“I don’t know how I feel.”
“Then tell her that.”
As usual, his older brother was the voice of reason. “I’ll talk to her after work.”
“In the meantime, go apologize.”
Abe waited until Maggie was free, then motioned for her to come into the kitchen.
She forced a smile. “What’s up?”
“Come out back with me for a minute.”
She nodded, and they went out the back door.
He stuck his hands in his pockets. “I’m sorry.”
“For…?”
“Being a jerk.”
“You’ve been doing a really good impression of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde this past week.”
“I know. Will you have a beer with me after work so we can talk about this?”
“I’m not scheduled to be here until closing.”
“Will you come to my house later then? I actually have something I want to show you.”
She cocked her head. “We’re just talking?”
“Yes. Just talk.”
“Do you think you’ll be home by eight?”
“Probably. I can text you when I leave here.”
“Okay. But if you yell at me again today…”
“I won’t. I promise.”
Gentry opened the back door. “I’ve got pizzas ready to be taken out.”
Abe waved at him. “We’re coming.”
