“How’ve you been?”

“I’m great.” She has absolutely no inflection in her voice, so he can’t tell if she’s telling the truth or being sarcastic.

She doesn’t ask about him.

Cecilia opens her mouth and Stewart stops her with a quick look.

“I had a great time the other night,” Trey says.

I stifle a snort, and Stewart cuts his glare to me.

Trey’s eyes narrow as he takes me in. “Who’re you?”

“Barrett’s my best friend,” Diana says. “Are those your parents?”

He glances over his shoulder with a grimace. “Yeah. We’re… well. It’s Parents’ Weekend.”

“Yeah. That’s why I’m with my parents now, too.”

For the first time, he acknowledges that Stewart and Cecilia are with us.

“Nice to meet you, Mr. and Mrs…” He looks back at Diana.

“Whitehall,” Stewart supplies tersely. “So you’re the asshole that’s trying to date my daughter.”

Diana rolls her eyes. “Okay, Daddy, that’s enough.”

“No. I want to know all about him.”

“You really don’t need to do that,” she says. “Not on my account.”

Trey’s face falls. “What does that mean?”

She scoffs. “Come on.”

“No. Tell me.”

“You didn’t actually have a good time the other night?”

He flushes. “I did.”

“You must have been on a different date than I was on,” she says bitterly.

I cover her hand with mine, and she turns to me, a soft smile curving her lips.

Trey clears his throat. “I was coming over here to ask if you wanted to go out again.”

“Seriously?”

“Maybe we can get coffee sometime,” he says. “Tuesday, after our abnormal psych class.”

“I don’t think that’s a great idea,” she says slowly.

My heart skips a beat.

“Come on. Have coffee with me. It’ll be great.”

“Diana,” Cecilia says softly. “Give the white boy a chance.”
