"I will. I promise I will." He held my gaze, desperate, broken, nothing behind his eyes but raw panic. "I just need sixty seconds where you're not walking away from me. Please, Kaior. Please just look at me. I’m sorry. I regret everything I did. You didn’t deserve any of this shit."
My heart pounded hard against my ribs. There was a mix of fear and fury. I’ve watched too many scenarios like this one, end up with the girl dying.
"You're scaring me."
"I’m not trying to." His grip loosened slightly. "I would never hurt you. You know that. I just need you to hear me out. Please."
I stayed still, my chest heaving as I watched him unravel right in front of me. For the first time since I walked through that door, I saw him differently.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
I was parked a few houses down, the blunt burning slow between my fingers with the windows cracked just enough to let the smoke drift out. My eyes never left that house. I told Kaior I would let her handle it, and I meant that. But letting her go by herself didn't mean I was about to leave her over here alone.
Everything stayed quiet for a while. She went inside, and I figured she was packing the rest of her things like she said she would. Then the front door opened. Kaior came out carrying a couple of bags and tossed them into the trunk. I thought she was about to get in her car and pull off.
She didn't.
Kyrie came walking out behind her, talking with his hands like he was trying to convince her to stay. A second later, they both turned around and went back inside. I took one last pull from the blunt, flicked it out the window, and started the Range Rover.
By the time I pulled into the yard, my jaw was already tight. I didn't bother parking straight. I threw the truck in park, climbed out, and Hulk was right behind me.
I walked through the front door and headed straight for the bedroom. The second I stepped into the doorway I caught sight of Kyrie holding Kaior down on the bed while she struggled underneath him.
"Let me go, Kyrie!"
That was all I needed to hear.
I went to work.
"GET YO' MUTHAFUCKIN’ HANDS OFF OF HER!"
My voice echoed through the room. Kyrie barely had time to turn around before I snatched him by the collar, ripped him off Kaior, and launched him into the dresser. The mirror shook against the wall as his body slammed into it before he dropped to the floor.
Hulk filled the doorway behind me with his arms folded across his chest. Nobody was getting past him.
Kaior sat up so fast she almost slid off the bed. Kyrie wasn't moving nearly as fast. He stayed on the floor rubbing the back of his head until his eyes landed on me. The second they did... He froze. I watched every bit of color leave his face. Whatever fight he thought he had left died the moment he realized exactly who had walked into that room. I didn't have to ask if he knew who I was. The look on his face answered that for him.
"Jokah?"
This nigga said my name like he saw a ghost. Oh yeah... He knew exactly who I was.
"You know me?"
"Y-Yeah."
"Good."
I took another step toward him.
"Then you already know you done fucked up."
"You brought this nigga to our house?" he yelled at Kaior. His voice was laced with panic.
I cut my eyes at him.
"Nah."
My voice stayed low.
