"Better than good."
He turned me around and finished rinsing the soap away before I reached for the bottle and returned the favor, my hands moving just as slowly as he did. When the water started to cool, Jokah shut the water off and grabbed a towel, wrapping it around me before reaching for one of his own. He pressed a kiss to my forehead.
"Come on," he said softly. "Let's get you comfortable."
CHAPTER TWENTY
My eyes still burned from the mace. They were red, swollen, and blurry every time I blinked, but I couldn't sit still long enough to let them heal. I climbed into my truck and started driving without any real destination in mind. I just needed to move. I needed to find Kaior. I needed something to quiet the panic that refused to loosen its grip on my chest.
Before I knew it, I was pulling up in front of her mama's house. I cut the engine, got out, and knocked on the door. A minute later, Samantha answered. Her arms were folded across her chest, and the look she gave me told me she already knew something was wrong.
"Kyrie?"
"Is Kaior here?"
"No." Her eyes narrowed as she took in my face. "What happened to you?"
I shook my head. "She left, and I can't find her. She's not answering her phone."
The concern on Samantha's face was immediate.
"Armani!" she called toward the back of the house. "Armani, come here!"
A few seconds later, Armani hit the corner with her phone in her hand. The second she saw me standing in the doorway, the smile on her face disappeared.
"Have you talked to Kaior?" Samantha asked.
"Yeah, she's fine. Why?"
"He says he's looking for her, and she's not answering her phone."
Armani looked at me and smirked. "Good."
I frowned. "Good?"
"Yeah. Maybe now you know how it feels."
"It wasn't like that. She's overreacting. That was my coworker. We went out after work. That's it."
Armani laughed.
"Boy, if you don't get the fuck from around me with that weak-ass excuse."
"I'm serious."
"So was my sister when she was crying."
"I'm serious."
"So was my sister when she was crying."
"I just need to know where she is."
Armani folded her arms and looked me dead in my face. "Why? So, you can go lie to her some more?"
"I wasn't—"
"You need to leave. For the past eight months you been fucking up. So, don't show up over here looking like somebody stole your puppy now that she's finally had enough."
