CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
I was parked outside Shania's place, about to head in and check on Cody, when my phone rang. Kaior's name flashed across the screen.
"What’s up babes?"
"Jokah." Her voice cracked and it sounded like she had been crying. "Where are you?"
I sat up straight. "I had a few errands to run. You good?"
"No."
"What happened?"
"I got into it with my boyfriend." A pause, her breathing unsteadily on the other end.
“Did that nigga touch you?” I barked.
“Not really.”
“What the fuck you mean not really?”
“I’ll explain it to you when I see you.”
That was all I needed to hear. Not the details. I didn't need them yet, I just needed her somewhere safe while I figured out how bad shit got between them.
"I'm about to shoot you an address. Come to my place."
"Okay."
I hung up and sent it through immediately. Then I sat there for a second, already running through everything I was going to need to find out about that nigga before the day was over. After I called my cousin to tell him she was coming, I climbed out of the car and walked up to Shania's door and knocked twice. She answered a minute later in booty shorts and a tank top with no bra on, nipples poking, and her hair pulled up in a messy bun. A wide smile spread across her face the second she saw me, but I didn't return it.
"Where's Cody?"
Her smile faded. "Is that who you came here for?"
"Yeah." I kept my voice flat. "Why else would I be here?"
"Is that Jokah?" Cody's voice carried from somewhere inside.
"Yeah, lil man. It's me."
I looked back at Shania. "You gone let me in or what?"
She stepped aside without saying another word. I walked in just as Cody walked towards me, grinning ear to ear. I dapped him up, pulling him into a quick shoulder bump.
"What's good, man?"
"Nothing. You here to see me?"
"Always." I glanced toward the hallway. "Let's talk."
I wanted privacy, but Shania sat her ass right there on the couch, arms crossed and clearly not moving. So, I nodded toward the front door instead.
"Come on outside with me for a minute."
We sat down on the porch steps together, and I gave him a second before I got into it.
"Look, man, you know me and your mama aren't together anymore, right?"
