I turned around, and the entire office had followed me outside by this time. Dr. Simmons, the hygienists, the front desk staff and the patients. Jasmine grabbed my arm.
"KAIOR!"
"What?"
"Who is Jokah?"
"I don't know."
She looked at me like I'd lost my mind. "You don't know?"
"I met him one time."
"ONE TIME?"
"At a club!"
"And this man bought lunch for an entire dental office?"
"I didn't ask him to!"
The office manager looked toward the grills. "Well, I'm not wasting good hibachi."
Everybody laughed, and within seconds, employees lined up with patients while the chefs tossed fried rice into the air and spatulas clanged against the grill. Someone started recording. One of the little kids yelled, "Mommy! He made the fire!" and the crowd cheered.
Jasmine leaned closer. "I ain't gon' lie, whoever Jokah is, he is showing OUT."
I covered my face with one hand. "Oh my God, he is so embarrassing."
"He has to be rich," Jasmine grinned.
I couldn't help but laugh. "This man is crazy."
Little did I know, across the street, parked behind the tinted windows of his bulletproof Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow, the crazy man was watching every second of it.
The drive across town felt longer than it usually did when I was creeping, maybe because I knew I shouldn't have been going there in the first place. This was wrong on so many levels, but either way, twenty minutes later I pulled into Talia's parking lot, killed the engine, and sat there for a second before climbing out.
I used my key to unlock the door. When I walked in Talia smiled the second she saw me.
"I knew you'd come."
"I told you I would."
Before I could step inside, the little girl sitting on her hip lit up. "Dada!"
My heart did the same. "There goes my baby."
She reached for me with both hands, kicking her little legs until Talia laughed and handed her over.
"She been looking out that window all morning."
I kissed the side of my daughter's face, and she immediately buried hers against my neck. "Damn, princess. You done got heavy."
She giggled and grabbed at the chain around my neck.
"You been giving your mama a hard time?"
She answered with baby babble that didn't make a bit of sense, and Talia laughed, as she closed the front door behind us.
