"I need answers."

"You need prayer."

"I'll get that later."

Taffy rolled her eyes so hard I thought they were gonna get stuck. "Whatever happens after I drop you off ain't got shit to do with me."

"Exactly."

Twenty minutes later, we pulled beneath the covered entrance of Jokah's building. Taffy put the car in park but kept it running.

"You sure?"

"No."

"Girl..."

"But I'm going anyway."

"You know what?" She pointed toward the lobby. "Go be toxic by yourself."

"I love you too."

"I ain't said all that."

I climbed out laughing and walked toward the entrance like I was invited. Jeff looked up from the security desk, the second the doors slid open.

"Evening, Ms. Shania."

"There goes my favorite cousin."

"I am not your cousin."

"Not by blood." I leaned across the desk with a smile. "But we family."

"Jokah isn’t here."

"I know. I just saw him."

His shoulders stiffened. "He told me not to let you upstairs."

"Ouch." I pressed my hand dramatically against my chest. "So that's how y'all doing me?"

"It's not me... it's just..."

"It's just him." I finished his sentence.

"Yeah."

I sighed, then slowly walked around the desk until I was standing beside him. Jeff looked straight ahead like if he didn't move, I might disappear. Poor baby.

"You nervous?"

"N-No."

"You stuttering."

"I-I don't..."
