Meredith had found Tristan and had her arms around his neck, no doubt telling him how much she shloved him.
I sent her an eye roll of disgust, which she ignored.
At twelve, I knew I needed to get home. I still had an essay left to finish…and start. I waved goodbye to everyone and headed towards the cloakroom to get my jacket.
Ben followed me. I kind of knew he would.
“I’m going to walk.”
“Uh, no, you’re not.”
“Yes, I am.”
“Well, then I am walking with you.” He sighed and fell into step with me. After about five minutes he rather bizarrely switched sides and walked on the edge of the pavement.
“What are you doing?”
“Walking by the traffic.”
“You know I’m twenty-six, right? Not six?”
He turned and smiled. “I know, but I’m doing it anyway.”
I grinned, swallowed whole by warm and fuzzy feelings as we meandered down the Upper Richmond Road on our way home. After another five minutes I slid my hand into his. He didn’t say anything and we walked holding hands in silence.
Just now, outside my door he hesitated. “Lilah, do you think I could take you on another date?” Kill me with your best bashful look, Ben, why don’t you, I thought.
I nodded. Of course I did. Because I’m dumb, and a glutton for punishment.
“It’s just I realised I only ever took you out properly once. We just, we just… Well, you know.”
“Had sex?” I added helpfully and we both chuckled, the sound making my heart soar in flight. “That would be lovely. Thanks for walking me home, Ben,” I said as I headed in here to my room.
“You’re welcome, Lilah.”
Mmm. I’m not sure what to think of this turn of events. What does it mean? Snogging in Foxtons? Walking me home? Asking for a date?
All I know is I’m sitting here grinning my head off like a complete fool.
I need to sleep on it. It will be clearer in the morning.
