“Where are you?” His voice rumbles low.
“No idea.”
“Where have you been?”
“The Green Man.”
“But there are a hundred.” He chuckles as he repeats one of our earliest conversations back at me.
“Come find me, Elijah.”
“I’m a lawyer, not a bounty hunter.”
“Come find me, and I’ll make it worth your while.”
There’s another sigh. “Green Man near the university by any chance?”
“Yes.” My feet are killing. I find a row of cement steps and sit on the lowest one. “Yes.”
“Stay there.”
“Will do.”
“Are you under a street light.”
“No idea, it’s dark here.”
“Ah crap, Faith. How drunk are you?”
“Very.”
The line goes dead, and I hum to myself. A couple walk along and ask if I’m okay, but I wave them on with a smile. I don’t know who they are asking—they can’t even walk straight themselves. Rude.
I’m building a statue from fallen leaves and discarded cigarette butts when a shadow falls across my path, illuminated by headlights.
“Come on, Sunshine.”
“Where am I coming?” I try to wink, but the eye I shut won’t reopen again.
He chuckles and lifts me by the elbows like a dolly. “With me.” His breath rushes across my skin. “Always with me.”
Chapter Twenty-One
Oh, God.
I roll and place my arm over my face. This is just pain on so many levels. Sooo many levels.
I stretch my toes; they seem to be okay. My legs are fine, too. The pain is concentrated in my head.
Moving my arm, I wince and open my eyes, blinking into dazzling sunlight. The balcony is open, brilliant white voile curtains billow into the room. Elijah’s room.
Oh, God.
“I’d say good morning but it doesn’t look like it is one.” The bed dips a little and he comes into view. I’m frozen, unable to move my head in the slightest. A fact which judging by the smirk on his face he’s worked out for himself. He’s gorgeous and cleanly shaven, his chest bare and his hair damp. I don’t know whether to cry over my headache or the fact I missed shower time.
“I’ve made coffee, I’ll go and get you some.”
“No.” I shake my head—which hurts. “Come here.” He grins and slides alongside me and somehow, I manage to shuffle myself so my head is resting against his chest. He smells divine, of soap and shampoo. His skin is still slightly damp, and I glide my fingers across it watching his nipples pucker as I tease my fingers around their sensitive circumference.
