She’s a shifter who’s never shifted. He’s a shifter who just found his fated mate.

Russo

I’ve been all over the world looking for my fated mate with no luck.

I’ve given up now and resigned myself to a quiet life alone in Night Grove Falls.

Until one night, I find an injured woman in my backyard.

An injured woman who just so happens to be my mate.

It’s obvious she’s been through something, and I know I need to help her and keep her safe.

I’m just not sure how to go about it.

Ever

I’ve been locked away for so long that it’s strange being free.

Although I guess I’m not really free.

I’m scared to step outside, terrified that I’ll be found and dragged back home.

My savior, Russo, says I can stay as long as I like.

He says that I’m already home, but I’m not sure how to trust his words.

How can I trust him when I can’t even trust myself?

“You need to shake things up,” Ansel sighs.

I blink, looking over at my brother. “What?”

We’ve been sitting on my porch for the last half hour, and I must have zoned out. I’ve been doing that a lot lately. I’ve been bored, on edge, and listless. It’s a weird mix of emotions.

“You need to do something,” he urges.

I frown. “Do what?”

“I don’t know, brother. Something. Anything!” He looks at me carefully. “You’ve been like a zombie for the last month since we wrapped things up with the cult. It’s like you have no purpose, no drive. That’s not like you. It reminds me of when you got out of the Marines.”

I know he’s right. When I got out of the military, I was lost. I didn’t know what to do with my life. I was twenty-six, and I thought I would’ve found my mate by then. I thought I’d be settled. Instead, I was back in Night Grove Falls, injured and alone. Well, I had my brother and the pack, but it wasn’t what I needed. I needed my mate. I still do, though I’ve given up on finding her.

I only enlisted in the Marines so I could travel and get out of this small town. I figured it was my best chance at finding my mate. I did eight years, three deployments, two bases, and never caught even a whiff of her scent.

When I was blown up, I knew it was time to get out, but I had no idea what I wanted to do next. Coming back here and helping the Midnight Haven deal with the threat of the cult north of our packs’ land helped, but now they’ve been dealt with, and I have nothing. No challenge, no job.

“Maybe take a trip,” Ansel suggests.

I snort. “And go where?”

“Anywhere! Pick a place on a map and book the ticket.”
