“Nah.” He leaned back in his chair with his arms behind his head.
The way his muscles flexed and relaxed made my mouth water.
“It was okay, I guess. Was too fucking wasted to remember.”
“Oh, cool… They also told me about Ty’s party on Friday.”
“Yeah, want to catch a ride with me after the game?”
“Y-yeah. That’d be cool.” I smiled at him.
“Sweet.” He got up from his chair. “So, I’ll see you at practice?”
I looked up at him and nodded. “Sure.”
“Cool.”
He was about to walk away when he suddenly stopped and turned to look at me. “By the way, I almost forgot to ask. This morning, before class started, I saw you in the hall talking with two of those new guys.”
It took me a second before I remembered meeting with Jess and Levi after I went to the bathroom.
“Yeah, I did.”
“What did you talk about?” he asked, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Nothing, really. Why?”
“It’s just…” He moved one hand to rub the back of his neck. “I don’t know. I don’t trust them. I mean, they have a criminal record. Did you know that?”
They had a criminal record? That was a bit hard to believe.
“Anyway, one of them is trying to make a move on Miles, and I don’t like it.”
“Why?” My body tensed with jealousy, hating the way he cared for Miles.
“Well, he’s my best friend. Of course, I want to protect him from thugs. Don’t you think that’s reasonable?”
“Yeah, it is, but what does it have to do with me?”
Shay-Lee sat back down in his chair. “I was thinking maybe you can find out more information about them. You know, to help me ease my mind?”
“W-what kind of info?” I asked, confused.
“Anything, really.” He waved his hand in the air. “Why they’re here and what they’re planning. Basically who they are.”
“Why me? I mean, can’t you ask them yourself?”
Shay-Lee chuckled. “‘Cause they already like you. I saw you eat lunch with them the other day. You know, under the old oak tree.”
We didn’t exactly eat lunch together, but I guessed it must have seemed that way.
“I-I guess I can do that,” I spoke, unsure of myself. I didn’t like the idea of getting close to someone with ulterior motives, but after the way Shay-Lee saved my ass, I wasn’t about to tell him no.
“Perfect. I really appreciate it, Jordy. It means a lot.” He stood again, shoving his hands in his pockets.
“So, you want me to spy on them?”
“Spy?” He snorted. “No, Jordy. Just make friends with them and tell me whatever you see fit. Think you can do that for me?”
