“Then what were you going to do with her? Let her go?” I demand.

“N-no…” he whispers.

“What were you going to do?” My eyes harden as I stare at the man.

He knows he isn’t getting out of this.

“I was going to rape her and then kill her.”

“Is it the first time?” I ask.

He shakes his head.

I look over at the woman in question. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. They will never hurt you again. You’ll sleep easy tonight. I promise.”

I pull my knife out of his side and slit his throat without hesitation.

She whimpers, pulling my eyes back to her.

Fuck.

She’s got blood sprayed across her face, and if I didn’t know better, I would think they were freckles, and in some sort of sick and twisted way, she looks beautiful even with fear bleeding from her pores.

Walk away, Yak.

You don’t have time for complications right now, no matter how pretty they are.

Then she sways, and I know I won’t leave her. Not until I know she’s safe.

Fuck.

CHAPTER

THREE

Julie

I feel woozy. Blood never bothered me, but seeing the man in front of me covered in it, I wonder if it’s because I’ve never truly seen so much of it at once.

He reaches out, and I flinch. He wipes his knife on the man now lying dead at his feet. Then he puts it away.

“It’s okay. You’re safe. I won’t hurt you,” he promises me.

I don’t know if I can trust him, but I’m finding it hard to breathe. I don’t know what to do.

He steps closer, moving slowly. When he is close enough, I let my head fall into his chest, his hands coming up to hold me.

“I don’t feel good,” I tell him right before I turn to the side and throw up.

He holds back my hair with one hand while holding me to his side with the other. Once I’ve puked my guts out, I wince seeing the vomit on his boots.

“I’m sorry.”

He chuckles. “Angel, I’m covered in blood. You think your puke bothers me?”

He has a point, but the reminder only makes the world spin more.

“I think I might faint,” I warn him.
