PROLOGUE

I take another drink from the bottle of beer I have been nursing all night as the party rages on around me.

Usually I would be all for this. The booze is flowing. The women are hot, wet, and willing. I could grab any one of them and fuck them against the wall right now. None of the men here would say anything. In fact, many of them are doing just that. The moans are drowned out by the bass of the music, but there’s no denying the smell. The clubhouse has the stench of alcohol and sex.

The Kings of Anarchy are known for being ruthless both on the battlefield and in bed. They’ve made a name for themselves in all fifty of the United States and have expanded into Canada. I shouldn’t be surprised. They are a much bigger operation than the club I represent. The Mountain River MC is nothing like the Kings of Anarchy.

Where they thrive in the violence and chaos, we tend to try to remain peaceful. We have made a name for ourselves as well, but we are more known for the good we do for the community. Sure, the cops still don’t like us, but we try to keep our illegal dealings to a minimum.

Not here. I’m not privy to what they do, but I know the scales are weighed heavily toward the bad column. I don’t judge them for it, though. Everyone needs to have their thing.

I scan the group once again, waiting for him to show his face.

“Hey, handsome. Want to take me for a ride?” A beautiful blonde runs her hand along my arm, giving me the same look all of these girls have given.

They are desperate for a patch. They want to be the woman who will change my mind. Make me take an old lady. Too bad for her, I’m not even remotely interested. Sure, I’m happy for my brothers who have found their forever girl. Three of them recently declared their own old ladies, which I could never fault them for. I never wanted that, though.

Why would I ever want to impose my shit on someone else? Sure, I am known as the fun one. The guy with a quick joke on the tip of my tongue. No one cares to see the guy underneath. The one I hide from everyone. Even myself at times.

The room is still loud and chaotic, but I know when he enters the room. The vibe changes. There is a tinge of respect in the air.

Then he meets my eyes. It’s one of our defining characteristics. How we know we’ve been fathered by the same bastard. He nods his head out the door. I don’t make any move until he disappears from my sight.

“Sorry, not tonight.”

That’s all I spare for the tits in front of me as I push through the crowd and head out the door on the opposite side of the building from where he just went.

It’s cool up here. Cooler than our summer at least. It’s something positive about being here.

Dread settles in my stomach as I make my way around the building.

“Where you going?” Aragon, the VP of the club, calls out from his spot by the fire.

“To take a piss. Seems the bathroom is a revolving door.”

He snorts. “Some of the girls prefer not to be fucked in public, and none of us are dumb enough to take them to our rooms.”

I nod. “I’m going to go find a tree to piss on.”

He smirks. “You do that. Watch out for those bears, though. They are killer.”

I ignore his warning and walk straight into the woods. I don’t know them like I know my woods back home, but I am comfortable here.

It only takes five minutes of walking before he makes himself known.

“Thanks for coming.”

I turn and find Yooper standing behind me.

“I thought you were going to make me walk all night,” I joke.

“I considered it. Payback for being a twerp growing up.”

I chuckle. “You’re just mad I could always pin you. Not my fault you were a small kid.”

“I let you pin me, dumbass. Mom would have killed me if I had made you cry.”

My mood sombers at the mention of our mother. She died when I was a teen. Yooper was already gone, but she left behind me and our two younger sisters. Thankfully they had fathers to go live with. I wasn’t so lucky.
