Despite the heat, a shiver runs down my spine.

Nic must have caught this because the next thing from his mouth is, “Carlson said you can pull out whenever you want.”

“Absolutely not,” I say.

Instead of not listening to me or second-guessing me, Nic merely says, “Then you’ll need to be very careful. Watch your back.”

I nod.

“Always.”

I nod again.

“Remember, the goal is to gather enough evidence so Audrey can approach Governor Dales. Barr’s got too many friends in the legislature for a two-thirds vote to impeach. But she’s sure she can get a letter from both branches to the governor to disbar him.”

I nod again.

“What’s the goal, Maya?”

“To find a thread.”

“That’s right. Find a thread and let Carlson pull it.”

This is why we’re flying down the highway toward Boston—to find that thread.

He doesn’t know I’m way beyond looking for threads. My goal is to find a smoking gun. If I’m all in, then I want Oliver Raymond Barr in prison.
