“Well,” I admit, “The truth is that sometimes I feel like an NPC in my own life.”

My Dad is silent as he waits for me to continue.

“There’s been times in my life when I’ve just sat, like an observer watching a tennis match, as life goes on around me. I see Orion having fun with friends. I see kids my own age doing stupid things and taking risks. I see the love that exists between everyone in happy relationships. But I don’t feel any of it myself.”

“I didn’t know you felt that way,” he says softly.

“Don’t feel sorry for me. I’m a really awesome person with an incredible life,” I say, which makes him laugh. “But now I’d like to try some of these experiences instead of just reading about them or watching other people live them.”

“I understand that completely,” he says.

“I know you do,” I tell him. “Especially as someone who has always grabbed every opportunity possible to experience life.”

“I think it’s great,” he says with a shake of his head. “It’s just that risk comes with the potential for pain.”

“I know that,” I tell him. “I think I could use some risk in my life, though.”

“You can,” he says. “You’ve never done anything to get into trouble in your life, Iris. You could actually use a little trouble,” he says honestly.

“Well, I’m not looking for trouble,” I tell him. “Just a little fun. I mean, I’m not you.”

My father laughs heartily before walking around the bar and embracing me in a hug.“Just don’t do anything too crazy,” he says.

“Of course. I’ll just stick to stripping,” I muse.

“Very funny,” he says with a fatherly glare. “Enjoy your lunch date. Remind him I have connections.”

“Will do,” I respond. “Thanks, Dad.”

“For what?” he asks.

“For being you,” I reply, hugging him tightly.

Orion: What are you doing, Purple Rain?

Iris: Getting ready to go to lunch with Henry.

Orion: You’re actually doing that?

Iris: Yes. I’m actually doing that.

Orion: Is it a good idea?

Iris: Why wouldn’t it be?

Orion: Well, you’re clearly not interested in the guy. You don’t want to lead him on.

Iris: I don’t know if I’m interested or not. I’ve never given him a chance. You’re the one who told me to get to know him.

Orion: I know.

Iris: So what is the problem?

Orion: There’s no problem.

Iris: Great. Glad there’s no problem.

Orion: Where are you going?
