I did and immediately became less agitated. The air also seemed to be washing over me like a teasing lover. Stroking my nipples and thighs to let me know it was here to undo me.

“Five minutes out.” She said to me.

I put my hair up in a ponytail to get it off my neck. It offered relief for a while before the next wave of heat hit. It seemed to echo back from the walls, making my entire body vibrate. I closed my eyes so that I wouldn’t start to hyperventilate. I focused on my breathing and tried not to feel the temperature spike or the way the walls seemed to be closing in around me.

“Brooke? They need you to open the door so they can get in. You’ll hear a rhythmic tap and then you’ll open, ready?”

Has it been five minutes already? I tried to stand but was too dizzy to get to my feet. The world tilted, curved, tumbled, and even flipped upside down every time that I tried.

“I can’t.” I muttered, gritting my teeth through the knots twisting in my groin.

“They’ll have to break it down. Are you clear of the doorway?” She asked.

I rolled free of the frame, falling over to be out of the way. “Yeah.”

Moments later there was a load boom followed by a huge cloak put over me. There was a cleanser misted in the bathroom, deodorizing the space. Then I was scooped up and whisked from the bathroom. They moved so quickly that I could barely keep up. I was going to protest but there were footsteps following us and I could hear fighting nearby.

“When you’re inside the vehicle, I need you to lock the door and make sure that the partition is closed and locked as well.” The operator said to me.

I was tossed inside quickly, and I almost didn’t recover in time. I could see the men approaching and the only thing keeping me safe was the lock on the door. I activated it and then turned to the partition. It was parted and I jumped up to close it, but not before I smelled the most wonderful scent I’ve ever experienced. It reminded me of rain, forest leaves, and rose vines.

I heard a low growl and it pulled me back into the moment. I shut it and locked it as the van sped away from the scene. I looked out the back to see men following us. They would until the scent faded from their subconscious.

“There’s Lavendereaux in the cabinet to your right. Take three of them. That should pause your heat and make it rescind.” The operator said.

“Thank you.”

I found it along with a bottle of water. I swallowed it, but then there was a sudden bout of nausea that took hold. I tried to hold it down and fire seemed to engulf my abdomen. Like a volcano, it erupted up from where it came and out of my mouth along with the contents of my belly.

“That’s not a good sign. When was your next dose?” She asked.

“A week from today.” I said between dry heaving.

“When was your last dose?” She asked.

“Three weeks ago on the 18th.”

“One… Two… Three…” she sighed. “I think it wore off before now, but you’re just noticing it. You can’t mix it with the other medication because they have adverse reactions unless it’s been out of your system for five days. Let me talk to the driver, can you hold please?”

“Yes.”

I looked around for something to clean the floor with and came up short. It was some kind of utility van that had been stripped down to its bones. It was being converted into something, but I wasn’t sure what.

“Brooke, we’re going to take you somewhere safe. You’ll just have to trust me.”

“Okay.” I sighed.

It wasn’t like there was a hospital nearby for these kinds of things. The closest one was two hours away and I’d never make the drive.

When we pulled into an underground garage, I was surprised to hear the door close behind us. Then the driver got out and went inside the side door, leaving me in the van.

“You’re going to give him a few minutes and then follow. You’ll need to shower to get rid of your scent as much as possible. I’ll call you back when we’ve figured something out.” The line went dead and I stared at the phone in shock.

Did she really expect me to walk into this beast’s lair? I’d heard that growl. He was anything but safe. Definitely not human. It sounded like something from another world and there was nothing to save me but my good intentions, hopes, and wishes.

No…

Another wave of heat knocked me on my ass and I couldn’t breathe.
